O’G3NE try their luck with uptempo summer single
The girls of O’G3NE have experienced over the past couple of months that winning a talent show like The Voice of Holland, does not mean that you are automatically a successful pop star in your country. You have to work hard to keep the interest of the public eye and that is what the sisters Lisa, Amy and Shelley have been doing. They immediately released their winners single ‘Magic’ that reached top 3 in the Dutch charts, but the next track called ‘Cold’ didn’t make it past spot nr. 70. They are back with another shot at success: the uptempo summer single ‘Wings to Fly’.
After the midtempo ‘Magic’ and the heavy and dramatic ‘Cold’ the young sisters now opted for something more lighthearted and infectious. As the summer finally arrived in the Netherlands, the girls recorded a song that perfectly fits the sunny weather we are experiencing at the moment. The song starts out with a guitar rif quite similar to David Guetta and Sia’s ‘Titanium’, which is never a bad thing of course. The song builds up to a catchy and light chorus that could have done with a bit more beat if you ask me. The production is quite minimal if you compare it to other contemporary tracks in the pop/dance genre. This is not necessarily a bad thing though, because the beautiful vocals and harmonies of these girls need room to shine.
Although the track gets a bit repetitive towards the end, O’G3NE make sure you don’t get bored by throwing in some lovely ad lips. Everyone who watched one of their performances at The Voice know that they can belt like no other. Although the track is a step forward as it is more radio friendly and hit worthy then their previous output, it might be a little too light and faceless to properly launch their career as pop stars. Then again, their fans (and the Dutch public) seems to love this on first listen, as the track is the current number 1 in our iTunes at the moment! Congratulations girls!

Single recensie: O’G3NE – Wings To Fly
O’G3NE hoopt op hit met zomerse pop/dance single
De dames van O’G3NE hebben de afgelopen maanden aan den lijve ondervonden dat het niet makkelijk is om je succes te behouden en in de spotlight te blijven na het winnen van een talentshow. Daarom hebben de zussen Lisa, Amy en Shelley de afgelopen maanden hard gewerkt. Ze lanceerden direct na het winnen van The Voice de single ‘Magic’ die de top 3 haalde in de Nederlandse hitlijsten. De opvolger ‘Cold’ wist echter niet verder te komen dan een 70ste positie. De meiden proberen het nu opnieuw met de zomerse en dansbare single ‘Wings To Fly’.
Na de midtempo track ‘Magic’ en de ballade vol drama ‘Cold’ is het nu tijd voor wat lichters met een opbeurende vibe. De dames moeten hebben gedacht: de zomer is begonnen, dus laten we daar op inspelen! Dat is gelukt met een zonnig klinkende uptempo track. Het intro lijkt wat op het gitaartje dat je hoort bij ‘Titanium’ van David Guetta en Sia, maar daar is natuurlijk niets mis mee. Vervolgens bouwt het lied op naar een pakkend, licht refreintje, dat op zich wel wat meer beat had kunnen gebruiken om het geheel wat krachtiger te maken. De productie is verder heel minimaal als je het vergelijkt met andere songs in het pop/dance genre, maar dat geeft de meiden tegelijkertijd de ruimte om hun prachtige stemmen en harmonieën te laten horen. Tegen het einde begint de track wel wat herhalend te worden, maar gelukkig worden we dan nog vermaakt met een paar flinke uithalen die ze live ongetwijfeld ook met gemak eruit gooien, gezien onze ervaringen met O’G3NE bij The Voice.
Hoewel deze single zeker een stap in de goede richting is, gezien het radiovriendelijker is met een grotere kans op een hit, zie ik dit nog niet het moment zijn dat hun carrière een vlucht neemt. Daarvoor is het net niet onderscheidend of opvallend genoeg in zijn soort. Hoewel het er wel op lijkt dat de fans en het Nederlandse publiek dit lied waarderen, want het stond enkele uren na de release al op de eerste plaats in de Nederlandse iTuneslijst. Gefeliciteerd meiden!
