Dutch and Belgian talent present interesting showcases in Club Ziggo

Ziggo started a new musical project to promote local talent. On their Ziggo Live evenings in Club Ziggo, a smaller venue next to the Ziggo Dome, they invite Dutch (and Belgian) artists to perform showcases, which are recorded for the Ziggo Xite digital channel. This month the performing artists were the Belgian band Dez Mona, Dutch soul singer Giovanca and singer/composer duo Kris Berry and Perquisite.

First up to perform were the guys of Dez Mona. Their music could be described as an interesting and eclectic mix of pop, jazz, folk and light rock. One of the most notable features of their sound is the distinctive voice of singer Gregory Frateur. He has a broad range and uses the higher register of his vocals quite regularly. They play a mix of older and newer material and songs like ‘Lack Of Love’ and ‘We Own The Seasons’ are pretty strong. The musicians show their versatility by exchanging their instruments; the guitarists also play piano. Dez Mona presented an interesting showcase and a nice start of the evening.

Next up is Giovanca, one of the best soul singers from the Netherlands. Her latest record Satellite Love was released a few weeks ago, so she only plays new material. The groovy opener ‘Look Of The State’ immediately gets the audience going. Giovanca proves herself to be a very charming personality on stage with her disarming smile. She continues her set with ‘Finally Yours’, a beautiful and soulful track about a guy who finds his true love, which happens to not be Giovanca herself. The angry undertones in the song are smart and subtle, but Giovanca sings them with conviction. On ‘No More’ and ‘Lockdown’, both reminding of the seventies soul and disco, she manages to get the crowd dancing. Her enthusiasm on stage is definitely contagious.

The highlight of her performance turns out to be the single ‘How Does It Feel’. The breezy, dreamy and laidback track has a brilliant chorus and Club Ziggo is captivated by a summer vibe for a moment. She ends her performance with the sweet ‘Come Around’. Her warm and soulful vocals fit perfectly with the beautiful melody and she proves once again why she is one of the best soul talents in the Netherlands.

Last but not least, Kris Berry takes to the stage with her ‘partner in crime’ Perquisite. The singer released her debut album Marbles last year, but worked together with composer and multi-instrumentalist Perquisite on a new record. A few weeks ago they released Lovestruck Puzzles, which they play live in Club Ziggo. Their performance together shows they complement each other perfectly in their music. They play with three other band members (guitar, drums and keyboard) and the chemistry between them and Berry and Perquisite is visible in their enthusiasm. Kris Berry is a lovely front lady and compared to her performances a year ago, she grew a lot as an artist, as she shows more confidence and attitude on stage now.

Her vocals are sweet and flawless as always and the songs she wrote together with Perquisite turn out to be pretty strong. They open their show with ‘Coming Back Home’, a catchy and swinging track with a slight country feel. On the laidback ‘Warm’, the audience shows to be willing to sing along as backing vocalists. ‘Hitchhike’, ‘Drifter’ and ‘Eighty Four’ are all pleasant tracks with particularly strong and memorable choruses. Berry and Perquisite end a great evening with the lovely song ‘Keep On Running’, one of the best tracks on their record. Ziggo Live managed to present three unique, diverse and most of all very talented artists who treated the audience to a set of great songs and a nice live show.

Interessante showcases van Nederlands en Belgisch talent in Club Ziggo

Ziggo is een initiatief begonnen om talent van eigen bodem te promoten. Tijdens de Ziggo Live avonden, die gehouden worden in Club Ziggo, de kleine zaal naast de Ziggo Dome, worden Nederlandse (en Belgische) artiesten gevraagd op te treden, wat gefilmd wordt voor het digitale kanaal van Ziggo en Xite. Deze maand waren de optredende artiesten de Belgische band Dez Mona, de Nederlandse soulzangeres Giovanca en gelegenheidsduo componist Perquisite en zangeres Kris Berry.

De avond werd geopend door de mannen van Dez Mona. Je zou hun muziek kunnen omschrijven als een mix van pop, jazz, folk en lichte rock. De meest opvallende eigenschap van hun sound is waarschijnlijk het onderscheidende stemgeluid van zanger Gregory Frateur. Hij heeft een zeer breed bereik en gaat dan ook regelmatig de hoogte in met zijn stem. De mannen spelen een mengeling van oud en nieuw materiaal en liedjes als ‘Lack Of Love’ en ‘We Own The Seasons’ zijn sterk en pakkend. De bandleden laten hun veelzijdigheid zien door regelmatig te wisselen van instrument; zo speelt de gitarist tijdens bepaalde nummers ook piano. Dez Mona geeft de avond een mooie opening met een interessante showcase.

Hierna is het de beurt aan Giovanca, één van de beste soulzangeressen uit Nederland, om het podium te betreden. Ze bracht onlangs haar plaat ‘Satellite Love’ uit en speelt daarom enkel nieuw materiaal in Club Ziggo. Ze opent met het groovy ‘Look Of The State’, waar het publiek meteen goed op reageert. Giovanca laat op het podium een zeer charmante persoonlijkheid en ontwapenende glimlach zien. Ze zet haar optreden voort met ‘Finally Yours’, een mooie, soulvolle track over een man die zijn ware liefde vindt in iemand anders dan Giovanca zelf. De boze ondertonen in de song zijn slim en subtiel, maar Giovanca bezingt ze met overtuiging. Op ‘No More’ en ‘Lockdown’ brengt ze de soul en disco van de jaren ’70 terug en weet ze het publiek aan het dansen te krijgen. Giovanca’s enthousiasme blijkt aanstekelijk te werken.

Het hoogtepunt van haar optreden is echter de vertolking van haar single ‘How Does It Feel’. Deze breezy, dromerige, laidback track heeft een briljant refrein en Club Ziggo werd heel even gefascineerd door een zomerachtige sfeer. Ze sluit haar optreden af met het lieve liedje ‘Come Around’. Haar warme en soulvolle stemgeluid past perfect bij de mooie melodie en Giovanca laat nog maar eens horen waarom ze tot de grootste soultalenten van Nederland behoort.

Om de avond af te sluiten, betreedt Kris Berry het podium met haar ‘partner in crime’ Perquisite. Berry bracht vorig jaar haar debuutalbum Marbles uit, maar werkte afgelopen jaar al druk aan een nieuwe plaat met componist en multi-instrumentalist Perquisite. Enkele weken geleden brachten ze Lovestruck Puzzles uit, die ze nu live spelen in de Ziggo Club. Hun optreden laat zien dat de twee elkaar op muzikaal vlak perfect aanvullen. Ze spelen met nog drie bandleden (gitaar, drums en keyboard) en de chemie tussen hen en Berry en Perquisite is duidelijk zichtbaar in hun enthousiasme. Kris Berry vervult haar rol als frontvrouw uitstekend. Het mag gezegd worden dat ze in vergelijking met haar optredens van vorig jaar als artieste behoorlijk gegroeid is en veel zekerder op het podium lijkt te staan.

Haar vocalen zijn zoet en loepzuiver als altijd en de tracks die ze samen schreef met Perquisite blijken zeer sterk te zijn. Ze openen met ‘Coming Back Home’, een pakkende en swingende track met lichte invloeden uit country. Op het laidback liedje ‘Warm’ weet Berry het publiek zo ver te krijgen om als achtergrondkoor met haar mee te zingen. ‘Hitchhike’, ‘Drifter’ en ‘Eighty Four’ zijn alle drie zeer fijne tracks met opvallend sterke en memorabele refreinen. Kris Berry & Perquisite sluiten een mooie avond af met ‘Keep On Running’, wederom een lekkere plaat met een overtuigende melodie. Deze mag dan ook zeker tot de hoogtepunten van hun plaat gerekend worden. Ziggo Live heeft drie unieke, diverse en vooral zeer getalenteerde acts op één avond weten te boeken, die het publiek op een set fijne liedjes en goede live shows hebben getrakteerd.
