Oh Land presents energetic show in Amsterdam
In order to promote her third record Wish Bone, the Danish artist Oh Land visited Amsterdam. The singer started her European tour with a performance in the venue Paradiso. She did not manage to sell out the show, but luckily enough she still gave her best in an energetic performance and she definitely got the audience very enthusiastic about it. Oh Land’s show focuses first and foremost on her musicality, but her enthusiasm, energy and interaction with her crowd are like the ‘Cherry On Top’ of a great concert.
Oh Land invited singer-songwriter and her own guitar player Owen Beverly and the German band Ballet School to perform as her supporting acts. After their sets it was time for Oh Land to start her own show. She opened with ‘Cherry On Top’, one of the more poppy tracks on her new record. The crowd reacted very enthusiastically when she announced her new single ‘Pyromaniac’ and many fans sang along. Although she mostly sang songs from her new record, she also played a few tunes from the Oh Land album. She did a rocking rendition of the beautiful ‘Wolf & I’ and played a nice version of ‘Perfection’ behind her keyboard.
During her shows around the time she released her second album, the singer more often played drums on stage, but in this tour she takes place behind her keyboard quite regularly. It shows Oh Land’s versatility and musicality. On a slightly updated version of ‘Sun Of A Gun’, one of the hit singles from her previous record, she still grabs her drum sticks to play along with her band. Oh Land dances energetically throughout the infectious single ‘Renaissance Girls’ and the slightly quirky hip hop track ‘My Boxer’, where she even gets herself a megaphone to scream the last part. The interaction between her and her backing singer, who does not just stand there to sing the backing parts, but also dances along throughout the whole show, is great and it is obvious that both girls are having a great time.
One of the highlights of the show however, takes place when Oh Land and her band play the haunting new song ‘Sleepy Town’. This stunning track seems quite challenging to sing live, but she pulls it off perfectly. Although her talent and musicality are obvious the whole evening, it is in this song that she proves how impressive her live vocals actually are. She also shows off vocally on a medley of ‘Heavy Eyes’ from her first record and ‘Green Card’, a song co-written by Sia, that could become the next single. In the first few tracks of the gig, Oh Land’s voice sometimes got pushed back to the background by the full sound of her band, but on the acoustic songs ‘3 Chances’ and ‘Love You Better’, she shows her vocals sound flawless as well without a big production around it.
Oh Land ended her performance with ‘White Nights’, her biggest hit to date. For once more, she put all her energy in her dance moves and the crowd joins her. It becomes apparent that Oh Land excels at interaction with her fans. She gets them to sing on ‘Rainbow’, chats with them about the differences between being Dutch and being Danish and above all manages to make them smile with her charming personality. Oh Land opened her European tour with a great show full of energy and impressive renditions of her beautiful songs.

Oh Land trakteert Amsterdam op een energieke show
Ter promotie van haar nieuwe album Wish Bone, deed de Deense artieste Oh Land gisterenavond Amsterdam aan voor een concert. De zangeres opende haar Europese tour in Paradiso. Ze wist de zaal niet uit te verkopen, maar gelukkig gaf ze nog steeds alles in een energiek optreden waarin ze het aanwezige publiek zeker enthousiast wist te krijgen. Oh Land’s show focust bovenal op haar muzikaliteit, maar haar enthousiasme, energie and interactie met het publiek zijn als een’Cherry On Top’ van een steengoed concert.
Naast de Duitse band Ballet School nodigde Oh Land singer-songwriter Owen Beverly, die ook gitaar speelt in haar band, uit als voorprogramma. Na deze sets was het tijd voor Oh Land om haar eigen show af te trappen. Dit deed ze met de nieuwe song ‘Cherry On Top’, een van de meest poppy liedjes op Wish Bone. Toen ze vervolgens haar nieuwe single ‘Pyromaniac’ aankondigde, kon ze al meteen op uitgelaten gejoel van het publiek rekenen. Hoewel ze vooral liedjes van het nieuwe album speelde, passeerden ook een aantal tracks van haar tweede plaat de revue. Zo kwam er een rockende versie van het mooie ‘Wolf & I’ voorbij en speelde ze een nieuwe versie van ‘Perfection’ op haar keyboard.
Tijdens haar shows ter promotie van het album Oh Land, speelde de zangeres regelmatig ook wat drumpartijen op het podium, maar tijdens deze tour neemt ze vaker plaats achter haar keyboard. Het laat zien dat Oh Land een muzikale en veelzijdige artieste is. Op een hier en daar wat geüpdatete versie van ‘Sun Of A Gun’ kon ze het toch niet laten om nog even de drumstokken ter handen te nemen. Oh Land danst zich vol energie door vertolkingen van de aanstekelijke single ‘Renaissance Girls’ en de behoorlijk aparte hiphop track ‘My Boxer’ heen. Voor de laatste pakt ze er zelfs nog een megafoon bij om haar stemgeluid nog wat kracht bij te zetten. De interactie tussen haar en haar achtergrondzangeres, die niet stilstaat of brave pasjes uitvoert, maar gedurende de show ook gewoon lekker los gaat, is leuk om te zien en het is duidelijk dat beide dames een geweldige avond hebben.
Eén van de absolute hoogtepunten van de show komt echter wanneer Oh Land en haar band de meeslepende nieuwe song ‘Sleepy Town’ spelen. Deze prachtige track lijkt een behoorlijke uitdaging om live te zingen, maar Oh Land weet het perfect neer te zetten. Hoewel het de gehele avond duidelijk is hoe muzikaal en getalenteerd ze is, laat ze hier pas echt horen hoe sterk haar stem live eigenlijk uit de verf kan komen. Ook op een medley van ‘Heavy Eyes’ van haar debuutalbum en ‘Green Card’, wat mede werd geschreven door Sia en zomaar eens de volgende single zou kunnen worden, staat ze vocaal haar mannetje. In de eerste paar liedjes van het optreden wordt haar zang af en toe een beetje naar de achtergrond gedrukt, doordat de band luid speelt, maar op akoestische vertolkingen van ‘3 Chances’ en ‘Love You Better’ laat ze horen dat ze ook loepzuiver klinkt met enkel een gitaar naast zich.
Oh Land sluit haar show af met ‘White Nights’, toch wel haar grootste hit tot nu toe. Nog één keer steekt ze al haar energie in haar uitbundige dance moves en het publiek doet gezellig mee. Het wordt duidelijk dat Oh Land zeer goed in staat is om haar publiek te bespelen. Ze laat ze zingen op ‘Rainbow’, kletst met ze over het verschil tussen Denen en Nederlanders en laat ze vooral glimlachen met haar hartverwarmende persoonlijkheid. Oh Land opende haar Europese tour met een geweldige show in Amsterdam, vol energie en indrukwekkende vertolkingen van haar mooie liedjes.
