Anouk collaborates with Afrojack on new single

There are no signs of Anouk slowing things down a bit in her career. After succesfully representing the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest last year with the ballad ‘Birds’, achieving a 9th position in the final, the singer released a new album called Sad Singalong Songs. Only a few months later she dropped a brand new promo single ‘Wigger’ and today she surprisingly released a new song called ‘You & I’, which is a collaboration with famous Dutch DJ Afrojack.

At this point, it is not yet clear if this new release is the first single from a new album or solely a new song, but it is obvious that Anouk is on to a hit with ‘You & I’. Within a few hours after it’s release, it climbed to the first spot of the Dutch iTunes charts. Anouk explained that she wrote the song together with Afrojack last year when they were working together in a studio. His influence on the song is definitely recognizable, but luckily this did not prevent Anouk from giving the track her own identity and style.

First of all, ‘You & I’ is not at all a dance track. Do not expect a predictable DJ featuring a pop star song with a catchy chorus and an instrumental breakdown, because this track is nothing like that. It could be best described as an emotional midtempo pop song that is based on a heavy bass and strong beats. Of course this is by far the most electronic thing soundwise, that Anouk has ever released, but this actually works surprisingly well. Her powerhouse vocals sound impressive in combination with Afrojack’s production.

Of course Anouk’s delivery of the lyrics is full of power and emotion. The song deals with unrequited love and waiting for that one person until he or she loves you back. Anouk manages to transfer this feeling of desperation and frustration excellently in the song. Although Anouk and Afrojack seem a bit like an unexpected duo at first, they proved that their sounds mix very well. This is a new step for Anouk and with delivering such a strong track, she shows it was a right thing to do to reinvent herself once again.

Single Recensie: Anouk – You & I

Anouk werkt samen met Afrojack op nieuwe single

Het lijkt er voorlopig niet op dat Anouk het wat rustiger aan gaat doen in haar carrière. Na haar succesvolle deelname aan het Eurovisie Songfestival waarbij ze voor Nederland een 9e plaats in de wacht sleepte met ‘Birds’, bracht ze direct de nieuwe plaat Sad Singalong Songs uit. Enkele maanden later was het echter alweer tijd voor de gloednieuwe promosingle ‘Wigger’. Vandaag kwam ze onverwachts met alweer een nieuw nummer getiteld ‘You & I’. Het gaat dit keer om een samenwerking met de DJ Afrojack.

Het is op dit moment nog niet duidelijk of het hier gaat om de eerste single van een nieuwe plaat of een op zichzelf staande release, maar het lijkt erop dat Anouk in ieder geval een grote hit in handen heeft. Binnen een paar uur na de release behaalde de track al de eerste plaats in de Nederlandse iTunes top 100 en Radio 538 riep haar direct uit tot de nieuwe alarmschijf. Anouk schreef het lied vorig jaar samen met Afrojack toen ze samen aan het werk waren in de studio. Zijn invloed is duidelijk te horen op de track, maar gelukkig heeft Anouk ook haar eigen stijl en persoonlijkheid in de song weten te behouden.

Ten eerste is ‘You & I’ bepaald geen dance track. Verwacht geen voorspelbare DJ en popster samenwerking met een pakkend refreintje en een instrumentale breakdown, want zo is deze plaat totaal niet. Het valt het beste te omschrijven als een emotionele midtempo popsong, die gebouwd is op een zware bass en sterke beats. Dit is met afstand het meest elektronisch klinkende geluid wat Anouk tot nu toe heeft uitgebracht, maar het werkt verrassend goed. De combinatie van Anouk’s krachtige vocalen en de beats van Afrojack klinkt indrukwekkend.

Anouk weet het lied weer vol overgave en emotie te brengen. De tekst gaat over een onbeantwoorde liefde en het wachten tot diegene ook van jou houdt. Anouk weet deze gevoelens van wanhoop en frustratie zeer goed naar het lied te vertalen. Anouk en Afrojack leken op het eerste gezicht misschien een wat onwaarschijnlijke combinatie, maar na het horen van de single blijkt dat de stijlen van de twee eigenlijk prachtig bij elkaar aansluiten. Voor Anouk is dit weer een nieuwe stap en ze bewijst maar weer eens dat ze er goed aan doet om zichzelf regelmatig te blijven vernieuwen.
