Single Review: Trijntje Oosterhuis – Walk Along
Eventhough we still have to wait five months before the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna will take place, the first countries already selected their song. The Dutch broadcasters recently announced that singer Trijntje Oosterhuis will represent them and on the 11th of December, her track ‘Walk Along’ was played on the radio for the first time. After Anouk’s 9th place with ‘Birds’ and The Common Linnets’ second spot with ‘Calm After The Storm’, hopes are high for another good result with an experienced performer.
Trijntje was inspired by Anouk’s good result and the former Eurovision participant even wrote her song ‘Walk Along’. If you compare Trijntje’s song to the two previous Dutch efforts, this one is a lot more instant, uptempo and catchy. After only one listen the chorus with the ‘why ai ai ai’ line immediately settles in your brain and will not leave for the rest of the day. The choruses, that also have a great melodic progression, last very short as the first chorus already start at 24 seconds, which is a bit of a let down as the last minute of the song is basically repeating the chorus over and over. Although this might be boring for us soon, for Eurovision, this might not be so bad, as it helps the song settle in your mind, which makes you still remind it after an evening full of other songs.
I am not entirely sure this song is special enough to reach top 5 or even win, but I think a decent result in the final should definitely be reachable, but let’s wait and hear what other countries will bring to the table. We do not have to worry about Trijntje’s live version, because her vocals are always on point and she already sounds really powerful in the studio version. She is already thinking about the stage performance and might work together with Hans Pannekoucke, the director who did the staging for The Common Linnets last year, which was a big part of their success. This might work out well for Trijntje as well. For now we know we, as Dutchies, do not have to be ashamed at all about our entry and I think we have great chances on being in the final for the third year in a row.

Single Recensie: Trijntje Oosterhuis – Walk Along
Het duurt nog ruim vijf maanden voordat het circus in Wenen los zal barsten, maar Nederland heeft alvast de inzending voor het Eurovisie Songfestival van 2015 gepresenteerd. Enkele weken geleden werd bekend gemaakt dat Trijntje Oosterhuis onze eer zou gaan verdedigen en op 11 december werd haar songfestivallied ‘Walk Along’ voor het eerst op de radio gedraaid. Na de resultaten van Anouk (een 9de plaats met ‘Birds’ in 2013) en The Common Linnets (een 2de plaats met ‘Calm After The Storm’ in 2014) liggen de verwachtingen voor de deelname van de ervaren Trijntje behoorlijk hoog.
Oosterhuis raakte geïnspireerd door het goede resultaat van Anouk en liet het schrijven van haar eigen songfestivallied zelfs aan haar over. Dit is gelijk in de stijl van het liedje en aan het feit dat Anouk in het achtergrondkoor te horen is, te merken. ‘Walk Along’ is in vergelijking met de twee voorgaande Nederlandse inzending een stuk pakkender en swingender op het eerste gehoor. Het refrein staat als een huis en het ‘why ai ai ai’ gedeelte zit meteen stevig in je geheugen gemetseld. De coupletten, die ook een mooie melodische opbouw hebben, zijn eigenlijk veel te kort, want na slechts 24 seconden begint het refrein al. Dit is wel enigszins een gemiste kans, want de laatste minuut van het lied bestaat haast volledig uit het herhalen van dit refrein. Hoewel dit ons misschien al zwaar verveelt als het eindelijk mei is, maar de Europese luisteraar hoort ‘Walk Along’ dan voor het eerst en dan is het pakkende en herhalende juist een voordeel om te blijven hangen bij de stemmer.
Ik weet niet of het lied van Trijntje speciaal genoeg is om het festival te winnen of de top 5 te halen, maar ik ga er wel vanuit dat ze de finale kan halen en daar een degelijk resultaat neer kan zetten, hoewel dit natuurlijk ook van de concurrentie af zal hangen. Met het optreden in mei komt het vast goed, want Oosterhuis heeft nog altijd een dijk van een stem, wat ook op de studioversie al duidelijk te horen is. Ook gaat de zangeres in gesprek met de Belgische regisseur Hans Pannecoucke die ook verantwoordelijk was voor het beeld bij de inzending van The Common Linnets, een belangrijk element in hun succes. Nederland hoeft zich dit jaar wederom zeker niet te schamen voor een over het algemeen sterke en smaakvolle inzending waarmee we probleemloos de finale zouden moeten kunnen halen.
