Paloma Faith gloriously returns to Paradiso after five years
In the United Kingdom, Paloma Faith has been one of the biggest female pop stars over the past few years, but in the Netherlands she did not really have a hit single yet. Still she managed to sell out Paradiso with ease, before traveling to Utrecht for a gig in TivoliVredenburg. The last time she performed in the Netherlands was already five years ago, in 2010, when her debut album was just released. In 2014, her third album A Perfect Contradiction came out and with this record, she is now touring all over Europe.
It is clear that Paloma really loves this album, as she played almost every single track of it, while only playing one song of her first and second album, Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful? and Fall To Grace. From the first record, it was ‘Stone Cold Sober’ that still got the crowd dancing after all these years. She sang one of her absolute best songs ‘Picking Up The Pieces’, after excusing herself for not touring when her second album was released, blaming her record label for pushing a breakthrough in America. It was not the only occasion where she clearly stated she is not that happy with how her label is running her career.
She opened the concert with the groovy ‘Mouth To Mouth’, that sounds like a seventies disco classic. It was immediately clear that Paloma was glad to be back and her energy on stage is very contagious. She warmed the crowd up with a string of uptempo songs, including ‘Take Me’ and ‘Ready For The Good Life’. Her interaction with her band is great, when she dances with the charismatic and oh so endearing backing singer or when she crawls on the ground in between her guitarists. One of the hightlights of the show was her first UK number 1 (a fact of which she is obviously and deservedly proud) ‘Changing’, a collaboration with Sigma. She transformed the drum and bass banger in a somewhat slower track that suits her style better. Still pretty danceable though!
After Paloma explained the origins of A Perfect Contradiction (The Outsiders Edition) (her label rushed her to release in March, eventhough she did not properly finish the record, so she added some songs in November), she sang the new tracks like ‘Beauty Remains’ and the gorgeous Diane Warren penned track ‘Leave While I’m Not Looking’. In this song, her dramatic and theatrical style of performing, came to a beautiful climax with singing the chorus while covering her eyes, quite literally. Another highlight of the night was her other song written by the legendary songwriter, ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’ (number 1 in Australia last year, just so you know). She gave a more than passionate rendition of this track with big ad lips, made even more dramatic with an echoing sound effect on her microphone.
After this emotional performance she leaves the stage, but comes back once more to dance and funk. She excuses herself for performing the Tina Turner track ‘River Deep, Mountain High’, but states she loves to sing this song so much, she just has to do it every gig. It is clear that she loves every second of it, and so does the audience. The funky single ‘Can’t Rely On You’, produced by Pharrell Williams, is the last highlight of a great night. The band plays very smooth and Paloma and her backing singer give their all once more. This was a passionate performance, full of soul, class and energy.

Paloma Faith maakt vijf jaar afwezigheid in Nederland meer dan goed
Paloma Faith heeft zich in de afgelopen jaren in het Verenigd Koninkrijk ontwikkeld tot één van de grootste vrouwelijke popsterren, maar in Nederland heeft ze nog niet echt een grote hit op haar naam staan. Dat weerhoudt haar er echter niet van Paradiso in Amsterdam uit te verkopen en door te reizen naar Utrecht voor een concert in TivoliVredenburg. De laatste keer dat ze optrad op Hollandse bodem was in 2010, toen ze Paradiso aandeed tijdens de tour voor haar eerste album. In 2014 verscheen de derde plaat A Perfect Contradiction, waarmee ze Europa doorreist.
Het wordt duidelijk dat Paloma vooral erg trots is op deze plaat, want hiervan speelt ze haast alle liedjes, terwijl de eerste twee albums een beetje links worden laten liggen, met slechts één liedje van beide. Ze brengt het publiek nog eens aan het dansen met haar eerste single ooit, ‘Stone Cold Sober’ en ze brengt ‘Picking Up The Pieces’, één van haar beste liedjes ooit, ten gehore nadat ze haar excuses aanbiedt voor het feit dat ze met album twee nooit in Nederland heeft getourd. Ze geeft haar platenmaatschappij hier de schuld van, die haar liever zag doorbreken in Amerika. Overigens niet de enige keer dat ze het label dat haar carrière in goede banen moet leiden een veeg uit de pan geeft.
Faith opende haar concert met het groovy ‘Mouth To Mouth’, dat haast klinkt als een disco klassieker uit de jaren ’70. Het is aan haar enthousiasme en energie meteen te zien dat ze oprecht blij is weer in Paradiso te spelen. Ze trakteert haar publiek op een hele reeks uptempo liedjes, waaronder ‘Take Me’ en ‘Ready For The Good Life’. De interactie met haar band is aanstekelijk om naar te kijken, als ze tussen haar twee gitaristen over de grond rolt, of danspasjes uitvoert met de ontzettend charismatische achtergrondzangeres. Eén van de hoogtepunten van de avond is haar eerste nummer 1 hit in het Verenigd Koninkrijk (een feit waar ze terecht erg trots op is), ‘Changing’ met Sigma. Ze brengt het lied in een eigen versie die iets minder drum and bass is, maar nog steeds erg dansbaar.
Nadat ze het tot stand komen van A Perfect Contradiction (The Outsiders Edition) heeft uitgelegd (haar label verplichtte haar in maart een album te lanceren terwijl het nog niet af was, dus voegde ze er in november nog wat liedjes aan toe) brengt ze de nieuwe nummers ten gehore, zoals ‘Beauty Remains’ en het prachtige door Dianne Warren geschreven ‘Leave While I’m Not Looking’. In dit lied komt Paloma’s dramatische en theatrale manier van optreden tot een climax, als ze tijdens het refrein vrij letterlijk haar handen voor haar ogen doet. Natuurlijk kan de ook door Warren geschreven hit ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’ (nummer 1 in Australië overigens) niet achterblijven en de uithalen in deze meeslepende ballade krijgen nog wat extra kracht mee door een galmend effect op haar microfoon.
Na deze dramatiek is het ook nog tijd om weer even te dansen. Paloma biedt al haar excuses aan voordat ze een cover van Tina Turner’s ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ inzet, maar geeft aan te veel plezier te beleven aan het zingen van de plaat en het dus niet te kunnen laten. Dat vindt het publiek helemaal niet erg, want de zaal gaat uit z’n dak tijdens haar swingende versie. Vervolgens laat ze Paradiso nog eenmaal swingen met haar hit ‘Can’t Rely On You’, geproduceerd door Pharrell Williams. Nog één keer horen we hoe strak haar band speelt en hoe ze samen met de achtergrondzangeres alles geeft. Het was een meer dan geslaagde show vol soul, klasse en energie.
