Disappointing performance by inaudible FKA Twigs in Paradiso

FKA Twigs came back to Amsterdam on thursday 5 March for a show in Paradiso. Her last show here was in the reasonably smaller Tolhuistuin and yet she managed to sell out her Paradiso gig, part of the 5 Days Off Festival, as well. The singer is a critic’s darling ever since the release of her debut record LP1 last year, but I have to admit she was not able to meet the high expectations around this perfomance in Amsterdam.

Unrest in the audience was growing during a 20 minute long intro with some slightly psychedelic background music. The long wait was forgotten for most of her fans from the minute she walked on stage, but when she started single ‘Video Girl’ very early in the show, it became painfully clear that her microphone was way too low to compete with the heavy beats of the track, resulting in FKA Twigs being almost inaudible for most of the song. That was quite a let down, because this definitely is one of the best tracks on her album. The same ritual repeated when she performed the iconic and atmospheric ‘Water Me’ after this that also completely fell flat because of the sound problems. During ‘Lights On’, another highlight from LP1, nothing changed.

In this case it was not only the technique that let her down, but also the setlist, because most of the fan favourites were already in the first part, exactly the part where the problems with the microphone were the worst. In the middle of the concert, Tahliah (Twigs’ real name) noticed people chatting during her song for which she stopped the performance. She asked people to leave the room if they wanted to talk, probably not realising people were also distracted by the fact that they could not hear her voice properly enough. After some fan shouted this to her, things actually got better. It was a relief to finally hear that flawless, angelic voice live during great songs like ‘Pendulum’, ‘Numbers’ and ‘Kicks’. In these moments, all elements of her performance came together nicely; the heavy light show, her expressive dancing, the dark beats (played by the three band members) and that voice we all wanted to hear so badly.

For a second it looked like she would save the night, because we had not heard her biggest single ‘Two Weeks’ yet, so when that song kicked in all fans were over the moon. Disappointment won when her voice completely drowned again in the production of that mighty chorus. It could have been a great performance if only her microphone worked properly, because her songs are perfectly suitable for impressive live performances and vocally she has it in her. Oh well, I will just play the record again.

Concert recensie: FKA Twigs in Paradiso

Teleurstellend optreden van onverstaanbare FKA Twigs

FKA Twigs was op 5 maart terug in Amsterdam voor haar eerste show in Paradiso. De zangeres stond vorig jaar nog in de Tolhuistuin, maar wist de grote zaal van de poptempel nu uit te verkopen als onderdeel van het festival 5 Days Off. Nadat ze vorig jaar haar debuutalbum LP1 lanceerde, werd ze door critici met open armen ontvangen. Het is spijtig om te moeten concluderen dat ze de hoge verwachtingen rond haar concert donderdagavond niet wist waar te maken.

Nadat het publiek eerst 20 minuten werd geteisterd met psychedelische achtergrondmuziek als intro terwijl het licht in de zaal al uit was, waren de meeste fans dit alweer vergeten vanaf het moment dat FKA Twigs het podium betrad. Toen ze al snel de single ‘Video Girl’ inzette, werd het echter pijnlijk duidelijk dat haar microfoon veel te zacht stond afgesteld om haar boven het geweld van de beats uit te laten komen. Dit was nogal teleurstellend, gezien het één van de beste liedjes van de plaat is. Hetzelfde ritueel herhaalde zich bij het iconische ‘Water Me’, dat ook compleet in het water viel door geluidsproblemen. Ook het normaal erg sterke ‘Lights On’ kon niet meer worden gered.

Dit was overigens niet alleen een fout aan de kant van de technici, maar ook de setlist hield te wensen over met zoveel favorieten van de fans al in het eerste blok van de show, juist toen de problemen met de microfoon het ergst waren. Halverwege haar concert merkte Tahliah (zoals Twigs echt heet) op dat er wel erg veel mensen door haar liedjes aan het praten waren en ze legde het optreden even stil, om mensen die niet stil wilden zijn te verzoeken weg te gaan. Normaal zou ze hier een sterk punt hebben gehad (je betaalt immers om naar de artiest te luisteren), maar in dit geval had ze zich waarschijnlijk niet gerealiseerd dat een deel afgeleid was door het feit dat haar stem amper te horen was, wat haar door een fan werd toegeroepen. Na dit moment werd het geluid beter afgesteld en konden we toch nog genieten van haar loepzuivere, engelachtige geluid op prachtige songs als ‘Pendulum’, ‘Kicks’ en ‘Numbers’. Op deze momenten vloeiden alle elementen van de show wel goed samen: de heftige lichtshow, haar expressieve dansen, de beats van een strak spelende driekoppige band en die stem die we allemaal zo graag wilden horen.

Even leek het erop dat FKA Twigs de avond nog kon redden toen ze haar grootste single ‘Two Weeks’ inzette, maar alsof de duivel ermee speelde, verdronk haar stem weer in de veel luidere productie van het indrukwekkende refrein. Dit had een geweldig concert kunnen zijn, want haar prachtige liedjes lenen zich wel voor een theatrale uitvoering en vocaal heeft ze het zeker weten in haar. Ach, dan zet ik het album nog maar eens op.
