Eurovision in Concert keeps on getting bigger and better
For the seventh year in a row, a few Eurovision enthusiasts organized a promo concert in Amsterdam for the participants of the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, to be held in May in Vienna, Austria. What started out as a small event in a club, grew out to be one of the biggest Eurovision related events of the year. Fans from all over Europe come over to Amsterdam to see a lot of their favourites of that year. In 2015, the organization managed to bring over 24 out of the 40 participants and even some top favourites for the victory. Here is a review of the performances of the night.

Of course, Eurovision In Concert is not complete without a former participant as host, so Edsilia Rombley did this job. She opened the night with the swinging ‘Hemel en Aarde’ (Netherlands in Eurovision 1998, 4th place), to which the audience already went completely mad, overwhelming Edsilia. Because of the many ballads in the competition this year, Rombley and her co-host Cornald Maas (the Dutch commentator) asked the crowd to be as quiet as possible during these songs. The first contestant to perform was Monika Kuszynska from Poland, who performed her ballad ‘In The Name of Love’ in a wheelchair, because of a car accident in 2006. She gave a great performance and received a warm applause from the audience.

Edsilia Rombley

Apart from the fact that there a lot of ballads in this year’s competition, the variation in styles is great to see. For example, Latvia sends Aminata with her song ‘Love Injected’, a hyper modern, slightly alternative electronic pop song, that breathes a similar atmosphere to the music of artists like FKA Twigs. This song couldn’t be more different from the traditional ballad ‘N’Oubliez Pas’ by the French Lisa Angell. Only similarity here is that both gave great vocal performances. As Edsilia Rombley also noted, there are a lot of strong voices in this years competition. From Albania’s Elhaida Dani with the strong midtempo track ‘I’m Alive’ to the heartache of Greek Maria Elena Kyriakou and from Knez (Montenegro) and his traditional balkan ballad to the stylish German Ann Sophie and her lovely soulful pop song ‘Black Smoke’.

Because of the many slow songs, the audience was happy whenever an uptempo track they could dance to came on, which caused the entries of Isreal (the ethnic Justin Timberlake like ‘Golden Boy’), Serbia (typical eurovision dance number ‘Beauty Never Lies’) and Slovenia (the married couple Maraaya with the catchy tune ‘Here For You’) to get a very warm welcome from the crowd. Like every year, the biggest favourites were scheduled in the last part of the show. Norway impressed with a great performance of the spellbinding song ‘A Monster Like Me’ by Mørland and Debrah Scarlett. Elnur Huseynov from Azerbaijan gave a convincing performance of the beautiful ballad ‘Hour of the Wolf’. Australia’s first ever contestant Guy Sebastian got the crowd dancing to his contemporary entry ‘Tonight Again’. Big favourite for the win Måns Zelmerlöw from Sweden received a huge audience reaction thanks to his energetic rendition of the European hit to be, ‘Heroes’. And last but not least, our very own Dutch Trijntje Oosterhuis sang her song uber catchy ‘Walk Along’ with 1500 other people in de Melkweg. And if that wasn’t enough, the Norwegian winners from 1985, Bobbysocks, performed their ‘Let It Swing’.

Ann Sophie (Germany)

For the true diehards there was an afterparty in Vondel CS where Måns Zelmerlöw performed again, but this time not only his 2015 song ‘Heroes’, but also his Melodifestivalen entries from 2007 and 2009, ‘Cara Mia’ and ‘Hope and Glory’. Ann Sophie came back for yet another stunning performance of ‘Black Smoke’ and the British duo Electro Velvet let the audience swing to their 20s inspired ‘Still In Love With You’. The organization of Eurovision In Concert once again did a great job to make all of this possible and this evening has me beyond excited for everything that will happen in Vienna.

Elnur Huseynov (Azerbeidzjan)

Eurovision in Concert wordt elk jaar groter en beter
Het was dit jaar alweer de zevende keer dat Eurovision in Concert werd georganiseerd in Amsterdam. Wat begon als een kleine show in een club, groeide tot één van de grootste promo events rondom het Eurovisie Songfestival. Fans vanuit heel Europa reizen af naar Amsterdam om hun favorieten van het aanstaande songfestival alvast in actie te zien. Dit jaar wist de organisatie maar liefst 24 van de 40 landen te strikken en dat leverde een bonte verzameling aan liedjes op.

Zoals elk jaar is het feestje niet compleet zonder een oud-deelnemer als presentator. Dit jaar nam Edsilia Rombley deze taak op zich. Ze opende de avond met haar klassieker ‘Hemel en Aarde’ (een vierde plaats voor Nederland in 1998) waarop het publiek al gelijk helemaal los ging, waardoor Edsilia even niet meer wist waar ze het zoeken moest. Ze kondigde songfestivalgoeroe Cornald Maas aan als medepresentator en zij vertelden het publiek vooral te luisteren en stil te zijn tijdens de vele ballads die vertolkt zouden gaan worden. Monika Kuszynska uit Polen beet het spits af met de ballade ‘In The Name Of Love’. De zangeres zit sinds een ongeluk in 2006 in een rolstoel, maar liet dit haar er niet van weerhouden mee te doen aan het songfestival. Haar optreden wordt warm onthaald door een uitverkochte Melkweg.

Guy Sebastian (Australië)

Het is leuk om te zien hoeveel variatie er zit in de deelnemende liedjes van dit jaar. Kijk bijvoorbeeld naar Letland, die Aminata stuurt met het lied ‘Love Injected’, een hypermodern, lichtelijk alternatief elektronisch poplied. Dit is haast niet te vergelijken met de traditionele ballade ‘N’Oubliez Pas’ van Lisa Angell uit Frankrijk. De enige overeenkomst is dat beide dames een uitstekende stem hebben. Dat is iets wat Edsilia ook al opviel. Er zitten dit jaar veel uitmuntende vocalisten tussen de kandidaten. Van Elhaida Dani uit Albanië met haar krachtige midtempo lied ‘I’m Alive’ tot de hartenzeer van Maria Elena Kyriakou uit Griekenland en de balkanballad van Knez uit Montenegro tot de soulvolle pop van Ann Sophie uit Duitsland.

Trijntje Oosterhuis (Nederland

Door de vele ballads, veerde het publiek helemaal op als er weer gedanst mocht worden, waardoor de liedjes van Israël (een etnisch dansliedje met Justin Timberlake invloeden, met de titel ‘Golden Boy’), Servië (typische songfestivaldance met ‘Beauty Never Lies’) en Slovenië (het getrouwde stel Maraaya met het aanstekelijke ‘Here For You’) een extra enthousiast onthaal krijgen. Natuurlijk bewaarde de organisatie de grote favorieten tot het laatst. De Noorse Mørland en Debrah Scarlett gaven een indrukwekkend optreden van het prachtige ‘A Monster Like Me’. De eerste Australische deelnemer Guy Sebastian wist de zaal op zijn kop te zetten met het swingende en eigentijdse ‘Tonight Again’. Elnur Huseynov uit Azerbeidzjan maakte indruk met een gevoelige vertolking van de mooie ballade ‘Hour of the Wolf’. Grote favoriet Måns Zelmerlöw kreeg een zeer enthousiaste reactie vanuit de zaal op zijn energieke vertolking van de toekomstige hit ‘Heroes’. Vervolgens zong onze Trijntje Oosterhuis haar pakkende ‘Walk Along’ met 1500 man in de Melkweg. En alsof dat alles nog niet genoeg was, kwamen de Noorse winnaars uit 1985, de Bobbysocks, ook nog even langs om ‘Let It Swing’ te zingen.

Voor de echte diehards vond er ook nog een afterparty plaats in Vondel CS waar de Zweedse Måns Zelmerlöw naast ‘Heroes’ ook nog even zijn Melodifestivalen klassiekers ‘Cara Mia’ en ‘Hope And Glory’ ten gehore bracht. Ann Sophie gaf wederom een foutloos optreden van haar sterke track ‘Black Smoke’ en het Britse duo Electro Velvet liet de zaal nog eenmaal swingen op hun op de jaren ’20 geïnspireerde song ‘Still in Love With You’. Wederom grote complimenten aan de organisatie die dit concert wederom tot een succes wisten te maken. Na deze avond kijk ik al helemaal uit naar alles wat er in Wenen te gebeuren staat!
