Tove Styrke introduces new album ‘Kiddo’ in Amsterdam
These are exciting times for Tove Styrke. The Swedish pop star is travelling around Europe to introduce new music from her upcoming second album Kiddo that will be released in the first week of June. Styrke, who rose to fame participating in the Swedish Idol in 2009, launched a self titled album with an electro pop sound in 2010. She followed this up with the Borderline EP in 2014, which functioned as an introduction to her new sound. She treated Bitterzoet in Amsterdam to a lot of exciting new songs.
She came on stage in black shorts, a vest and a cap. The show was opened with the completely new song ‘Ain’t Got No’ that will also open the upcoming album. As second track, she played ‘Borderline’, a big summery single with a slight ska and reggae sound that already went down well with the audience. Every single song from the Borderline EP was played live, as these tracks will all end up on Kiddo as well. The uplifting and insanely catchy ‘Samurai Boy’ was absolutely one of the hightlights of the evening and the enthusiasm Tove performed it with, is contagious to say the least.
The new songs bring out the feisty side of Tove Styrke as she performs sharp lyrics over a strong beat and catchy rhythms in songs like ‘Walking A Line’. On the completely new song ‘Who’s Got News’ she shows a more vulnerable side. Her beautiful vocals shine on this ballad. On ‘Number One’ she goes full on pop with an already legendary rhyme that includes the words ‘Britney Spears’ and ‘Fierce’. ‘Snaren’ has a bit of an urban vibe with Tove rapping in the middle eight. A thing she also does convincingly. ‘White Light Moment’, the very poppy biggest hit of her career so far, was put into a new arrangement to fit her current sound and this slower, more adventurous instrumentation gives a competely new identity to the track. ‘Million Pieces’ and ‘High and Low’, two highlights of her debut, are performed in the original versions and they still sound as current and fresh as they did in 2010.
Tove saved the best for last with performing ‘Ego’ in the end of the gig. This new single with an uplifting chorus, but quite sad lyrics about losing someone that changes and only cares about his own ego, is performed in a quite high vocal range, but she absolutely nails this live as well. After this impressive rendition it is time for her most quirky track to date, ‘Even If I’m Loud It Doesn’t Mean I’m Talking To You’. This punchy track is the perfect closer to a night full of daring, melodic and fresh electro pop from a promising pop star with a beautiful voice and a great attitude on stage.

Tove Styrke introduceert nieuw album ‘Kiddo’ in Amsterdam
Het zijn spannende tijden voor Tove Styrke. De jonge Zweedse popster staat op het punt om haar tweede album Kiddo te lanceren en tourt door Europa om het nieuwe materiaal voor te stellen aan haar publiek. De zangeres brak 2009 al door toen ze deelnam aan de Zweedse versie van Idols. Een jaar later kwam haar debuutalbum uit, dat al gelijk een geheel eigen electro pop sound had gekregen. Pas in 2014 werd hier een vervolg op uitgebracht met de Borderline EP, dat vooral functioneerde als een introductie op het nieuwe geluid. Bitterzoet werd vrijdagavond getrakteerd op een hoop spannende en frisse gloednieuwe tracks.
Tove kwam het podium op in een zwarte korte broek, vest en een pet. Het geheel werd compleet gemaakt met sokken in sandalen. Ze opende met het nieuwe ‘Ain’t Got No’ wat de eerste van veel vers materiaal was. Ze gooide de zomerse ska en reggae geïnspireerde single ‘Borderline’ er al snel in, wat zeker werd gewaardeerd door het aanwezige publiek. Elk liedje van de gelijknamige EP werd live gezongen, omdat deze ook allemaal op Kiddo zullen staan. Een hoogtepunt hiervan was het ontzettend pakkende en dansbare ‘Samurai Boy’. Het enthousiasme waarmee Tove het ten gehore brengt in onweerstaanbaar.
Haar nieuwe materiaal brengt overduidelijk een pittige kant van Tove naar boven met stevige beats en scherpe songteksten. Dit is bijvoorbeeld sterk te horen op ‘Walking A Line’. Op het gloednieuwe ‘Who’s Got News’ laat ze een wat breekbaarder geluid horen. Haar stem komt goed uit op de gevoelige ballade. Op ‘Number One’ kiest ze onvoorwaardelijk voor pop met een nu al een legendarisch rijmpje met de woorden ‘Britney Spears’ en ‘fierce’. Op het meer urban georiënteerde ‘Snaren’ begint ze spontaan te rappen en dit klinkt nog overtuigend ook. Haar grootste single tot nu toe in Zweden, ‘White Light Moment’ van haar debuutalbum, wordt in een volledig nieuw jasje gestopt met een rustigere, spannende productie. ‘Million Pieces’ en ‘High And Low’ worden wel in de originele versie gebracht en klinken nog even fris en modern als toen ze uitkwamen in 2010.
Omdat Tove het beste voor het laatste wilde bewaren, werden we tegen het einde nog getrakteerd op de nieuwe single ‘Ego’. De hoopvolle melodie van het refrein staat in sterk contrast tot de verdrietige songtekst over het verliezen van iemand die wordt opgeslokt door zijn eigen ego. De song is geschreven in een hoog vocaal register en ook live kan de stem van Tove dit prima aan. Na deze indrukwekkende versie was het tijd voor het laatste lied van de avond, het opstandige en eigenzinnige ‘Even If I’m Loud It Doesn’t Mean I’m Talking To You’. Het is een perfect slot op een avond vol uitdagende en verfrissende electro pop van een opkomende ster met een sterke podiumuitstraling.
