Review:
It is safe to say that the guys of the British band Years & Years are the biggest new act in pop music in 2015. They stormed the international charts with their hit single ‘King’ after they were announced as the Sound of 2015 by the BBC. Their debut album Communion will come out in June and Olly, Mikey and Emre decided to premiere another single, called ‘Shine’. It will be a hard task to top the incredible success of ‘King’, but I have no doubts about the fact that this will be another huge hit for them.
In comparison to the previous singles ‘King’ and ‘Desire’, ‘Shine’ has a somewhat slower pace, but still sounds uplifting. The style of the track is similar to what they did before, which means: incredibly catchy synth pop with a huge chorus, lyrics about (unrequited) love and the fragile and lovely vocals by Olly. When they performed in Amsterdam in April, ‘Shine’ immediately stood out as one of the catchiest new songs that would work well as a follow up single. The combination of the once again more than serviceable production that takes the song to a higher level and the chorus that just begs for you to sing along, makes a sure fire summer hit. Imagine yourself driving down the coast line in an open car with this song blasting from your speakers… Heaven, ain’t it?
Update: ‘Shine’ is currently number 1 on UK iTunes!
