Brandon Flowers plays slick show in Amsterdam
With his band The Killers, Brandon Flowers outgrew playing clubs and usually sells out arenas when touring. Solo however, the singer likes to perform in smaller venues. At the moment he is introducing his second solo record, The Desired Effect, to his European fans and he stopped in Amsterdam to perform in a sold out Paradiso. The show is a mix of new material, hits of his first solo album and also some of the biggest songs by The Killers.
Not surprisingly, Flowers opens the show with the song ‘Dreams Come True’, which is also the first track of The Desired Effect, released in May. The uplifting vibe of the chorus immediately gets the crowd going. He does not slow down when he plays the first single and one of the absolute highlights of the new record, ‘Can’t Deny My Love’ ater this. The crowd enthusiastically sings along to the irrestibly catchy chorus. With ‘Crossfire’ in the first part of the show, he already gave away his biggest solo hit, which is performed by 1500 voices tonight. The charismatic and more than experienced performer knows exactly how to warm up his crowd and from the very first moment he comes on stage they are in awe of him. He puts on a slick show which fires one smashing chorus after another at a willing crowd. If he wants them to sing and jump, they sing and jump!
From the new material, it is the track ‘Lonely Town’ that impresses the most. The dark and moody vibe of the song comes across just as well live and the exploding post chorus halfway is impressive. With a full band and two backing singers, Brandon is able to recreate the layered and detailed production on his new album, that was heavily influenced by the biggest bands of the eighties. This eighties influence is the most obvious on ‘I Can Change’, that contains a smartly used sample of the Bronski Beat classic, ‘Smalltown Boy’. When he performs it live during the encore, he even makes a little mash-up out of his track and the original.
Although his new material is definitely received well by the ecstatic crowd that is happy to see their idol in such an intimate venue, it is inevitable that they go even more mental when they hear the first notes of The Killers classic ‘Human’. Before he leaves the stage for the first time he plays their ‘Mr. Brightside’ and judging by the crowd reactions, this still is the best (or at least most popular) song he has written to date. During the encore, he shares the stage with Joe Pug, an American singer-songwriter that is his supporting act as well. Brandon was impressed by the song ‘If Still It Can’t Be Found’ and decided to perform the track together with him, a beautiful moment of serenity during the show. He ends the show on a high with the new song ‘Still Want You’, a beautiful interplay between him and his two flawless backing singers. This interplay is taken to another level when the crowd gets the opportunity to join in. In the end it must feel good that the crowd did not only come down to hear a few hits by The Killers, but also did their homework on the incredible material Flowers delivered as a solo artist so far.

Brandon Flowers geeft gelikte show in Paradiso
In november 2013 stond Brandon Flowers voor het laatst in Paradiso, toen samen met zijn bandleden van The Killers. Dit was overigens bij hoge uitzondering ter ere van de MTV European Music Awards in Amsterdam. Enkele maanden daarvoor verkochten ze namelijk nog de Ziggo Dome uit. Voor de ongelukkige fans die toen geen kaartje wisten te winnen, deed er zich nu weer een kans voor om hun held Brandon Flowers in Paradiso te bewonderen. De frontman van The Killers kondigde namelijk een Europese clubtournee aan rondom zijn tweede soloalbum The Desired Effect. In een stijf uitverkocht Paradiso speelde hij een slimme mix van nieuw materiaal, hits van zijn eerste soloplaat en een aantal The Killers klassiekers.
Niet geheel verrassend opende Flowers de avond met het lied ‘Dreams Come True’, dat tevens het eerste lied van het in mei verschenen The Desired Effect is. De vrolijke track weet het publiek gelijk in de juiste stemming te krijgen. Hij houdt het tempo hoog door vervolgens ‘Can’t Deny My Love’, de steengoede eerste single van zijn nieuwe plaat, te spelen. Als hij vervolgens ook zijn grootste solo hit ‘Crossfire’ uit 2010 al in de strijd gooit, die vanavond overigens door 1500 stemmen werd gezongen, hoop je maar dat hij niet direct alles weggeeft, maar dat blijkt gelukkig mee te vallen. De charismatische en meer dan ervaren man van de avond weet als geen ander hoe hij zijn publiek moet bespelen en ze eten dan ook uit zijn hand vanaf het moment dat hij het podium betreedt en het ene na het andere pakkende refrein op ze afvuurt. Als hij wilt dat ze zingen, dan zingen ze. Als hij wilt dat ze springen, dan springen ze.
Van het nieuwe materiaal is het vooral de single ‘Lonely Town’ die veel indruk maakt. De donkere en broeierige sfeer en de explosieve tweede helft van het lied komen live ook prachtig uit de verf. Met behulp van een voltallige band en twee achtergrondzangeressen weet Flowers de vette en gelaagde sound, geïnspireerd op de grote bands van de jaren ’80, live ook ogenschijnlijk zonder moeite over te brengen. De inspiratie uit de 80s is nog het meest duidelijk hoorbaar bij ‘I Can Change’, dat een slimme sample van Bronski Beat klassieker ‘Smalltown Boy’ bevat. Live maakt Flowers zelfs een fijne mash-up van zijn plaat en het origineel.
Hoewel zijn nieuwe materiaal zeker goed wordt ontvangen door het uitzinnige publiek, is het onvermijdelijk dat vooral het dak eraf gaat wanneer hij een The Killers klassieker zoals ‘Human’ ten gehore brengt. Dit kunstje herhaalt hij nog eens als hij tegen het einde van de show ‘Mr. Brightside’ inzet. Als we af moeten gaan op de reactie van zijn fans, is dit nog steeds het beste (of in ieder geval populairste) lied dat hij ooit schreef. Tijdens zijn toegift geeft Flowers de ruimte aan nieuw talent, door zijn podium te delen met het voorprogramma Joe Pug. Brandon geeft aan onder de indruk te zijn van zijn lied ‘If Still It Can’t Be Found’ en de twee brengen het als duet, wat voor een fijn rustpuntje zorgt. De show wordt groots afgesloten met de nieuwe song ‘Still Want You’, waarin de wisselwerking tussen Flowers’ en zijn achtergrondzangeressen wederom heerlijk klinkt. Deze wisselwerking krijgt er nog een speler bij als het publiek uit volle borst mee begint te zingen. Het zal Brandon Flowers een goed gevoel geven dat zijn fans niet enkel kwamen om de bekende Killers hits te horen, maar ook zeker hun huiswerk hebben gedaan wat betreft zijn tot dusverre uitstekende solowerk.
