I don’t know how it is for you people all around the world, but in Amsterdam the weather is quite stormy and rainy at the moment. Luckily, I came across a song that perfectly fits the mood that comes with this weather. It is called ‘Scared’, performed by the band Colour The Atlas. The four piece is promoting the release of their new EP called Amethyst and ‘Scared’ is a first and very promising taste of the sound. If you are a fan of emotional duets with an exceptionally dark and moody atmosphere by an alternative/triphop act with pop hooks, then by all means check this out.
Ok, maybe that description sounds a little too vague when you put it together, so I will break it down nicely. ‘Scared’ opens with a male and female voice, asking in a fragile manner: “Are you there? Are you scared?” Their crystal clear voices blend well together and carry emotions of fear, doubt and slight confusion convincingly. Halfway through, drums and guitars kick in to give the song a fuller, but still moody sound, but the vocals keep relatively calm, which makes them all the more captivating, especially when repeating the question ‘Are you scared?’ towards the end. This song definitely scores a 10 out of 10 on build up and creating an atmosphere. ‘Scared’ is a beautiful gem that has been hiding for long enough. This song could do great things for Colour the Atlas!
