It has been quite a while, but Hind Laroussi is back. The Dutch singer who rose to fame in 2003 by participating in Idols and represented the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest of 2008, hasn’t released an album since 2010 and her most recent single, ‘Make it Count’, was launched in 2013. After two years of silence the single ‘Salam, Salam’ was released today and as one can make up from the title, she once again used her Moroccan roots in the sound of her eclectic musical style, which she has appropriately been calling ‘crosspop’.
If I was to describe ‘Salam, Salam’ in one word, I would go for ‘uplifting’. The upbeat, but at the same time relaxed sounding track is perfect for the summer season. The light Arabic influences in the instrumentation work very well with the synths that play a major part in the post chorus. The lyrics are hopeful and deal with love, end of war and standing strong together and although this could have ended in some cheesy one liners, it actually sounds rather fresh. Hind’s vocals are warm and soothing as Always and she even gets some help from a cute choir of children. It’s good to have her back in the Dutch pop scene. Let’s hope she will not take another 2,5 years for a new track!

Single recensie: Hind – Salam, Salam
Het heeft even geduurd maar Hind Laroussi is terug. De zangeres die in 2003 groots doorbrak dankzij haar deelname aan Idols en in 2008 Nederland vertegenwoordigde op het Eurovisie Songfestival, bracht al sinds 2010 geen nieuw album meer uit en de meest recente single ‘Make It Count’ stamt uit 2013. Meer dan twee jaar later is Hind terug met de single ‘Salam, Salam’ en zoals de titel doet vermoeden liet de zangeres zich weer inspireren door haar Marokkaanse roots, die al vaker nadrukkelijk terugkwamen in haar eclectische mix van stijlen, die ze zelf ‘crosspop’ noemt.
Als je ‘Salam, Salam’ in één woord moet omschrijven, dan zou het ‘aanstekelijk’ zijn. De song heeft een swingende sound en een positieve en ontspannen vibe, die perfect op het zomerse weer aansluit. De lichte Arabische invloeden in de instrumentatie gaan hand in hand met de synthesizers die in de post-chorus nadrukkelijk terugkomen. De songtekst is hoopgevend en gaat over liefde, het einde van oorlog en het idee van samen sterker staan. Dit had in een afgezaagd liedje kunnen eindigen, maar gelukkig wordt het fris gehouden. Hind’s stem klinkt even warm en loepzuiver als altijd en ze krijgt zelfs nog wat hulp van een schattig kinderkoortje. Ik ben blij dat ze haar terugkeer in de popmuziek heeft gemaakt. Laten we hopen dat we niet nog eens 2,5 jaar moeten wachten op een nieuw liedje!
