Selah Sue charms and convinces in outdoors concert in Bloemendaal
The Dutch public loves Selah Sue and the Belgian singer regularly performs in the Netherlands. She sold out Paradiso a few times and even performed at Pinkpop as one of the main acts. She will sing in the Heineken Music Hall in december this year, but in her busy festival summer she also made room in her agenda for a cute outdoors gig in the woods of Bloemendaal. She visited the open air theater Caprera and stole the hearts of every single visitor in this beautiful location in between trees at sunset.
The duo Hydrogen Sea from Brussels came along to warm up the audience with an enjoyable and solid set of electronic pop music with nice beats and dreamy vocals. Selah Sue came up with her guitar to start out with two acoustic tracks, like she always does at the start of her concerts. This way, she manages to get the full attention of everyone immediately and her renditions of ‘Always Home’ and ‘Mommy’ are gorgoeus. She continues with a swinging ode to her ‘Daddy’ where the full band (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and two backing vocalists) join her. It’s the promising start of a night full of the swinging mix of pop, soul, R&B, triphop and hiphop.
She manages to bring a balanced mix of tracks of her first self titled album and the recently released second record Reason. Although the older songs like ‘Fyah Fyah’ and the closer ‘Ragamuffin’ are met with great enthusiasm it is her recent single ‘I Won’t Go For More’ that makes people in the theatre stand up and dance for the first time. By the time she finally brings her hit ‘Alone’, also from the second album, the whole crowd is dancing and singing along enthusiastically. Too bad a lot of the visitors of the show did not have their full attention for the performance when she brought small and acoustic tracks later in the show like the moving ‘Time’. I don’t understand why you would pay to see a concert and then decide to chit chat through at least half of it, but that of course has nothing to do with the talents of miss Sue.
As a performer, Sanne (as Selah is called in daily life) keeps growing both vocally and in confidence. The reach of her voice is a lot bigger nowadays and she especially impresses with gorgeous high notes in her live performance of ‘Reason’ and other tracks. She also showed her rapping skills on her own track ‘Together’ and Lauryn Hill cover ‘Lost Ones’ and this slightly unexpected talent from the young Belgian singer is met with great enthusiasm by the audience. She stole the hearts of the people of Bloemendaal tonight and I’m sure a lot of people around Europe will follow soon when they see her perform at a festival this summer.

Selah Sue charmeert en overtuigt tijdens openluchtconcert in Bloemendaal
Het Nederlandse publiek sloot Selah Sue al jaren geleden in de harten. De Belgische zangeres staat geregeld in een uitverkocht Paradiso en trad onlangs nog op als één van de grotere acts op Pinkpop. In december zal ze de Heineken Music Hall aandoen, maar in haar drukke festivalzomer wist ze nog een gaatje te vinden voor een liveshow in het openluchttheater Caprera te Bloemendaal. Ze wist met gemak de harten te stelen van elke bezoeker op deze prachtige locatie tussen de bomen bij zonsondergang.
Het Brusselse duo Hydrogen Sea was naar Bloemendaal afgereisd om het publiek op te warmen en dit deden ze met een solide set van elektronische pop met fijne beats en een dromerige stem. Selah Sue begon haar set zoals gebruikelijk op alleen gitaar en ze liet akoestische versies horen van de tracks ‘Always Home’ en ‘Mommy’. Door dit verstilde begin hing het publiek gelijk aan haar lippen. Ze vervolgde met een fijn swingende ode aan haar ‘Daddy’, waarbij ze werd ondersteund door haar volledige band, bestaande uit een gitarist, bassist, toetsenist, drummer en twee prachtige achtergrondzangeressen. Het is een veelbelovend begin van een nacht die in het teken staat van een onweerstaanbare mix van pop, soul, R&B, triphop en hiphop.
Selah Sue brengt een goed gebalanceerde mengeling van tracks van haar eerste naar zichzelf vernoemde album en de tweede plaat Reason die eerder dit jaar verscheen. Hoewel de bekende liedjes als ‘This World’ en de afsluiter ‘Raggamuffin’ met groot enthousiasme worden onthaald, weet ze het publiek voor het eerst aan het dansen te krijgen met de meest recente, aanstekelijke single ‘I Won’t Go For More’. Tegen de tijd dat ze eindelijk de hit ‘Alone’, ook van het tweede album overigens, inzet, staat iedereen te swingen en wordt er uit volle borst meegezongen. Had het publiek deze aandacht nu ook maar vastgehouden bij kleine, gevoelige liedjes tijdens het tweede deel van het concert, zoals het breekbare ‘Time’. Ik snap nog altijd niet waarom je geld zou betalen voor een concert om vervolgens door minstens de helft uitgebreid heen te kletsen met je metgezel. Dat doet overigens natuurlijk niets af aan het talent van Selah.
De optredens van Sanne (zoals Selah eigenlijk heet) worden met de keer dat ik ze zie beter. Ze heeft steeds meer zelfvertrouwen, waardoor ze vocaal ook meer aandurft. Dat blijkt uit prachtige hoge noten die ze er ogenschijnlijk moeiteloos uit weet te gooien tijdens bijvoorbeeld de meeslepende track ‘Reason’. Ze laat zelfs horen dat ze ook behoorlijk kan rappen op haar eigen lied ‘Together’ en de Lauryn Hill cover ‘Lost Ones’. Dit ietwat onverwachte talent van de blonde Vlaamse wordt zeer gewaardeerd door het publiek dat haar een luid applaus geeft. Ze wist wederom de harten van de mensen in Bloemendaal te stelen vanavond en ik weet zeker dat ze nog een hele hoop Europeanen gaat inpakken tijdens de rest van haar festivalzomer.
