Aurora enchants Melkweg with magical voice and songs
The star of Norwegian pop starlet Aurora is rising fastly. The singer-songwriter does not have an album out yet, but her singles so far made a big impression on the web and she is often tipped as the next big thing. She is on a European tour at the moment and managed to sell out the ‘Oude Zaal’ in Melkweg in Amsterdam. With her debut LP out in March 2016, she has a lot of new music to introduce to her audience and it’s safe to say her magical voice, fairytale like songs and quirky stage personality enchanted Amsterdam!
The only 19 years old singer from Bergen released her track ‘Runaway’ in early 2015 and got the whole blogosphere at her feet. The beautiful ballad makes a big impression live with her crystal clear vocals and her four band bembers, who play passionately. Her music can be described as a mix of dark electronic pop with bright poppy choruses and organic elements. Uptempo tracks like ‘Under Stars’ and ‘Awakening’ which she released before sound just as strong in a live setting and the audience in de Melkweg is completely in awe of her when she performs the tracks ‘Little Boy in the Grass’ and the slightly creepy ‘Murder Song’ with her guitarist only.
It’s not only her unique voice which makes Aurora stand out. Her stage presence is quirky with bold arm movements, big, expressive almost doll-like eyes and some shy chats in between the songs. She seems surprised every time she gets huge cheers from the crowd and doesn’t stop telling how well her fans are treating her and how thankful she is that people in Amsterdam actually came down to see her play. Her humble and slightly awkward attitude makes the crowd even more enthusiastic and when she announces the single ‘Running With The Wolves’ her fans are finally able to sing along as well. The hypnotic electronic pop track with an undeniable hook and explosive chorus is her best work so far and definitely one of the best singles of 2015.
Her performance in de Melkweg makes clear there is much more to come when her debut album will be finally released. There is the poppy track, probably called ‘Warrior’, with a catchy repetition of this word in the chorus. She wrote a song about a ‘Conqueror’ that ‘doesn’t come her way’ and it’s catchy as hell and the performance involved some contagious dance moves. The most radiofriendly out of the bunch might be the one with ‘Give me some love and hold me tight’ in the chorus. It contains a great hook and it could be her crossover hit. She captivates us once more with an acoustic cover of ‘Life On Mars’ by David Bowie. I’m absolutely positive Aurora will be up to big things in the near future. She is unique and as authentic as one could get and has talent in bucket loads.

Concert recensie: Aurora in de Melkweg
Aurora betovert de Melkweg met sprookjesachtige stem en liedjes
De Noorse zangeres Aurora is momenteel met een indrukwekkende opmars bezig. De pas 19 jaar oude singer-songwriter heeft nog geen album uit, maar wist met haar singles tot nu toe een grote indruk te maken online en ze wordt regelmatig aangewezen als een potentieel grote ster. Ze is momenteel door Europa aan het toeren en wist last minute toch nog de Oude Zaal van de Melkweg in Amsterdam uit te verkopen. Haar album verschijnt in maart 2016 en het publiek wordt dan ook op veel nieuw materiaal getrakteerd. Haar haast magische stemgeluid, de sprookjesachtige liedjes en haar eigenzinnige persoonlijkheid zorgen voor een betoverend optreden.
Aurora wist begin dit jaar naam te maken toen haar single ‘Runaway’ verscheen. De muziekblogs wereldwijd waren onder de indruk en ook live weet de meeslepende ballade te imponeren. Haar loepzuivere stem klinkt minstens zo goed als op plaat en ook haar vierkoppige band speelt gepassioneerd. De muziek van Aurora kan worden omgeschreven als een mengeling van donkere elektropop, memorabele refreinen en organische instrumenten. Uptempo platen als ‘Under Stars’ en ‘Awakening’ die al eerder werden uitgebracht komen live prima uit de verf en ze weet de gehele zaal muisstil te krijgen met akoestische uitvoeringen van ‘Little Boy in the Grass’ en het griezelige ‘Murder Song’.
Het is echter niet alleen haar unieke stemgeluid waarmee ze opvalt. Haar uitstraling op het podium is eigenzinnig met drukke armbewegingen, grote, expressieve ogen en verlegen, licht ongemakkelijke praatjes tussen de nummers door. Ze is zichtbaar verrast elke keer dat het publiek haar toejuicht en ze kan hen niet genoeg bedanken voor het feit dat ze überhaupt zijn komen opdagen. Deze bescheiden houding levert haar alleen nog maar enthousiastere reacties op. De publieksliefde komt tot een hoogtepunt als ze eindelijk haar single ‘Running With The Wolves’ speelt en luid wordt meegezongen. De spannende elektronische productie met een sterke melodie en explosief refrein is haar beste werk tot nu toe en absoluut één van de hoogtepunten van 2015 op popgebied.
Haar optreden in de Melkweg maakt duidelijk dat er nog veel meer sterke liedjes aan zitten te komen als haar debuutplaat eindelijk in de winkels ligt. Het poppy ‘Warrior’ is ontzettend catchy en past perfect bij haar stem. Ze schreef een liedje over een ‘Conqueror’ die maar niet haar kant op wil komen en dit is de meest swingende plaat, die tevens uitnodigt voor een aanstekelijk dansje op het podium. ‘Give Me Some Love and Hold Me Tight’ is misschien nog wel het meest radiovriendelijke nummer dat voorbij komt. Dit refrein zou zomaar eens haar crossover hit kunnen worden. Ze eindigt met een boeiende, akoestische cover van ‘Life On Mars’ van David Bowie. Ik ben er zeker van dat ze binnenkort een nog veel groter publiek gaat aantrekken. Ze is uniek, schrijft fantastische liedjes en heeft een prachtige stem. Aurora heeft alles in zich om een grote te worden.
