Is Douwe Bob the right choice for Eurovision 2016?
Last week it was announced that The Netherlands will be represented by Douwe Bob in the Eurovision Song Contest of 2016. Just like last year, the country is early in announcing the news, as the show will take place in May, but AVROTROS, the Dutch broadcaster in charge of the Eurovision selection, made clear that the track won’t be premiered until February. So all we have so far is a name: Douwe Bob. Who is he and is he a promising name to bring the Netherlands success in Eurovision again after Trijntje Oosterhuis’ disappointing result?

Douwe Bob gained fame in the Netherlands through his participation in the first season of De Beste Singer-Songwriter van Nederland. He won the contest when just 19 years old thanks to mature songs with a light country feel. In 2013, his first album, Born In A Storm was released and contained the hitsingle ‘Multicoloured Angels’. In 2015, he came back swinging with a duet with Anouk (who represented the Netherlands at Eurovision 2013 with ‘Birds’ reaching top 10), called ‘Hold Me’, his biggest hit so far. His sophomore record Pass It On arrived and entered the Dutch charts on the first spot. He is a rising star to say the least!

So what do we know so far about his Eurovision participation? Well, Douwe Bob explained that he has already written the song and that it’s an uptempo song with a band sound. He wants his band to join him on stage in Stockholm in May and the AVROTROS promised to have learned from the mistakes Trijntje Oosterhuis and her team made last year. A professional team will work in time on the way that Douwe Bob will be captured on camera, so that’s of course a good sign. The Common Linnets and their second position in 2014 showed the importance of this part.

If Douwe Bob’s Eurovision song sounds anything like the breath of fresh air that is ‘Sweet Sunshine’, his latest single, I have faith this will turn out well. He is a strong singer-songwriter, he knows what he wants, his voice is pure and strong, he is definitely easy on the eye and I am sure Europe will fall for his charms if he looks into the camera often enough. It all depends on the song of course so let’s hope he managed to write a killer chorus that will have Europe swinging in front of their telly when the Netherlands come on!

Douwe Bob represents the Netherlands in Eurovision. Good choice?
Nederland was er dit jaar weer vroeg bij. Als eerste kondigden we een kandidaat aan voor het Eurovisie Songfestival. Vorige week kwam het hoge woord eruit dat Douwe Bob ons in mei gaat vertegenwoordigen in Stockholm. Op zijn lied moeten we echter nog even wachten, want in februari zal hij het voor het eerst ten gehore brengen, legde de AVROTROS ons uit. We hebben nu dus alleen nog de naam Douwe Bob. Wie is hij eigenlijk en is hij een geschikte keuze om Nederland weer succesvol te maken op het songfestival na de teleurstelling van Trijntje Oosterhuis?

Douwe Bob werd in Nederland bekend toen hij op 19-jarige leeftijd meedeed aan het eerste seizoen van Giel Beelen’s De Beste Singer-Songwriter van Nederland. Hij viel gelijk op met zijn volwassen liedjes in een lichte countrystijl en hij wist de show dan ook winnend af te sluiten. Zijn single ‘Multicoloured Angels’ werd een hitje en in 2013 verscheen zijn debuutplaat Born In A Storm. Pas in 2015 kwam zijn carrière in een stroomversnelling toen het duet ‘Hold Me’ met Anouk (die Nederland in 2013 weer de top 10 inzong op het songfestival met ‘Birds’) een grote hit werd. Zijn tweede plaat Pass It On verscheen en behaalde de eerste plaats in de albumlijst. Een rijzende ster dus, die Douwe Bob!

Wat weten we tot nu toe over zijn songfestivaldeelname? Douwe Bob vertelde enthousiast dat hij een geschikt uptempo liedje heeft geschreven met een band sound en hij wil dan het liefst ook met zijn mannen op het podium staan in Stockholm. AVROTROS liet tegelijkertijd weten te hebben geleerd van de fouten van Trijntje en haar team en zullen zich nu bijtijds met een professioneel team bezig gaan houden met hoe het er op beeld uit komt te zien. Dat is natuurlijk een goed teken, want dat was een belangrijke factor in het succes van The Common Linnets in 2014, dat Nederland een tweede plaats opleverde.

Als het songfestivallied van Douwe Bob enigszins klinkt als het verfrissende ‘Sweet Sunshine’, zijn meest recente single, dan heb ik wel hoop in een goede afloop. Hij is een eigenzinnige, getalenteerde singer-songwriter met een zeer aangenaam stemgeluid, een jonge uitstraling en een knappe kop die met de juiste blik in de camera wel wat harten op hol moet kunnen brengen in Europa. Natuurlijk draait het uiteindelijk vooral ook om het lied dus kom maar op met dat briljante refrein dat heel Europa voor de buis laat swingen!
