Kate Boy brings electro pop to ADE
Amsterdam is currently celebrating the huge Amsterdam Dance Event where every club and concert venue is organising special shows. Every top DJ from all around the world travels to the Dutch capital for one of the biggest party’s of the year. The club and concert venue Melkweg set up a night of electronic pop during this festival and invited the Swedish and Australian electronic band Kate Boy to perform. The trio does not yet have an album out (One will be released in November) but they have enough material to give an hour long energetic show full of dark, but swinging electro pop.
Kate Boy was joined by supporting act Cut_ from Amsterdam. The duo, who play a mix of electronic pop and trip-hop, impressed with some undeniably strong tunes, nice visuals and powerful vocals. Earlier this year they released a project with three related music videos for the songs ‘Tactics’, ‘Trigger’ and ‘Abstract’ and these three tracks actually form the highlight of their once again great set. I saw them live earlier this year as a supporting act for Years & Years in Paradiso and they are getting better and better. Good to hear there will be an album coming out in spring 2016.
After Cut_ warmed the willing crowd, it was time for Kate Boy. The band usually performs as a trio, but this time around the guitarist wasn’t here and they took the stage as a duo with vocals and keyboard/drums/synths. Front woman Kate Akhurst came on stage in a black shirt, black jeans, a cap and sandals. She opens the show by saying how happy she is to be back in Amsterdam and that is about the only thing she will say all night. She lets her icy, but undoubtedly strong singing voice do the talking from then on and rightfully so. She knows to sell the energetic, dark and swining electro pop the band is known for and the whole theatre hall in Melkweg is on their feet.
Kate Boy opened the show with the single ‘Midnight Sun’ which is immediately one of the highlights. The captivating and contagious single ‘Northern Lights’ is still doing really well with the crowd and also the powerful drums and synths of ‘Self Control’ go down well. They save the best for last with a thunderous live rendition of the pumping electro of ‘The Way We Are’. When they leave the stage after this and don’t return, it feels like the show went by way too fast, but I’m sure they will play a longer gig if they come back when the album is released. Definitely a convincing live act that needs to be watched in the coming months and years from now.

Concert Recensie: Kate Boy in de Melkweg
Kate Boy brengt denderende electro pop naar ADE
Amsterdam staat momenteel volledig in het teken van het Amsterdam Dance Event. Alle clubs organiseren speciale avonden en de grootste DJ’s ter wereld worden ingevlogen om de Nederlandse hoofdstad tot één groot feest te maken. De Melkweg draagt zijn steentje bij en organiseerde een electro pop avond in de theaterzaal. Ze nodigden de Zweeds-Australische band Kate Boy uit voor een optreden. Het trio heeft nog geen album uit (One verschijnt in november), maar wel genoeg materiaal op de naam staan om een uur vol donkere, energieke en swingende electro pop op het publiek af te vuren.
Kate Boy wordt vanavond bijgestaan door het Amsterdamse duo Cut_ als voorprogramma. De electro pop en trip-hop formatie wist indruk te maken met een aantal ijzersterke songs, bijzondere visuals en overtuigende live vocalen. Ze brachten eerder dit jaar een project met drie nieuwe, aan elkaar verwante videoclips uit voor de liedjes ‘Tactics’, ‘Trigger’ en ‘Abstract’ en deze platen zijn direct ook de hoogtepunten van de set. Ik zag ze eerder dit jaar al eens live als voorprogramma van Years & Years in Paradiso waar ze ook al een goede indruk achterlieten en ze groeien nog steeds. Het is goed om te horen dat er in het voorjaar van 2016 naar alle waarschijnlijkheid een eerste plaat verschijnt.
Vervolgens is het de beurt aan Kate Boy, dat normaal gesproken als trio optreedt, maar het vanavond moet stellen zonder gitarist. Kate zelf komt in een zwart t-shirt en broek met een petje en sandalen op. Ze opent de show door te vertellen hoe blij ze is weer in Amsterdam te mogen optreden en dat is eigenlijk ook het enige dat ze zegt. Voor de rest laat de kleine dame haar ijzige, maar ijzersterke stemgeluid de zaal vullen, om te beginnen tijdens opener ‘Midnight Sun’. Kate weet de energieke en donkere electro liedjes met de juiste houding overtuigend te verkopen en ze laat gehele zaal dan ook met gemak een dansje wagen.
Er wordt in de korte show heel wat krachtige electro op het publiek afgevuurd en vooral single ‘Northern Lights’ springt eruit met de gedetailleerde productie en een heerlijk refrein. Ook de energie van ‘Self Control’ vol drums en synths komt live uitstekend uit de verf. Het beste wordt echter voor het laatste bewaard met een knallende live uitvoering van het denderende ‘The Way We Are’. Als de show daarna meteen is afgelopen en er geen toegift volgt, wordt er een kleine teleurstelling gevoeld, maar niet getreurd: Kate Boy zal ongetwijfeld terugkomen voor een langere show wanneer het debuutalbum uit is en dat belooft een feestje te worden.
