Dutch singer Sandra van Nieuwland just released her third album Breaking New Ground in November. She made a fresh start with creating this record and she will start a theatre tour this month to play the new songs live. A Bit of Pop Music had a chat with the singer-songwriter who gained fame through The Voice of Holland about the creation of the record, living life fearlessly and dealing with criticism.

What is the ‘new’ in Breaking New Ground for you?
Before creating this record I decided to leave 8Ball Music and with every record it feels like you have to start all over again. The creation of an album and the writing of new songs always covers a specific period in your life. You continue working on new things you have learned so that is how the title came to be. It feels like a fresh new phase in my career.

Did you work differently creating this album?
Partly yes. On Banging On The Doors of Love I mainly wrote with Tjeerd Bomhof and although I collaborated with him again, I also wrote with David and James of The Nexus from London. During the writing and recording we really had a connection and that is quite special. I told them how I wanted the vocals to be produced in a manner that was inspired by Beth Orton and Kristina Train and then they told me they actually just produced a track for Kristina. It felt like it was meant to be!

On ‘Stop The Clocks’ you advise someone or yourself to enjoy life while it lasts. Why this theme?
I have these moments where I pause and look at myself while I zoom out a little. This could be after something bad has happened, but it might be anytime. I stop to think what I actually want to carry out to the world, not only in my career. Based on this you have to make decisions and fearessly step into new adventures. I’m not saying I always succeed, but I strive to live my life without fear and that is something that comes back in the lyrics of a lot of these tracks.

What is the most personal story on the record, one you maybe even didn’t want to share at first?
Usually when you have doubts like that, you should release it, because it is something special. I had that feeling with ‘Mona Lisa’. I always have a hard time explaining the meaning of my songs, but I can tell you the lyrics have a double layer where I talk about an important person, who started a new life with someone else. The person I was thinking about has a name that actually came close to the title of the song and that felt kind of wicked. I experience that kind of bizarre coincedences more often with Tjeerd and I decided it is a personal but beautiful story to share.

What do you hope listeners get from this album?
The best thing is when people are able to relate to the story of a song. That doesn’t necessarily have to be the same feeling I had when writing it, but if they are touched by it in one way or another, that is the most beautiful thing an artist can experience. If someone can find comfort in what you wrote, your job is done. When writing I always try to stay close to my own story, but at the same time I make sure not everything is about me, just so others can relate to it as well.

In January you will start your tour in theatres. What can people expect from the show?
We will try to create something special visually. I want the show to be dynamic, but the band will not be as big as last time. This however doesn’t mean that we will only play the slower songs! I want to create an experience, without too much distraction.

Do you prefer to perform in theatres or clubs?
It is easier to tell a story in theatre. Every detail you want to put into it, will be noticeable. In that way, it is more subtle than playing clubs, but that is great to do as well because of the energy in the room. Still I think theatres offer you more possibilities, visally as well! And of course you can rock on those stages as well!

By the way… would you consider participating in Eurovision if they would ask you?
I would definitely consider the possibility! I used to say no, because I was scared as hell. The attention I received when being on The Voice was a lot, but this would be a million times more. Still I believe you should never not do anything, because you are afraid of what others will say about it. I would never say no, just because of this reason. If you have the right song, you should just go for it!

Which song of this record would you have chosen?
I would probably have gone with something big like ‘Indian Summer’ or something fragile and stripped back like ‘Stop The Clocks’. The most important thing is that you do something that stands out, like Anouk and The Common Linnets managed to do. When that works, it’s great! It is a beautiful opportunity to showcase your music to millions of people and I would never forgive myself if I passed on this chance just because I was scared of all the publicity that would come with it.

Do you think you would care too much about the opinions of others?
I personally believe reviews and critics are not that important when you create what you believe is right as an artist. You do it for the people who end up enjoying your work. That is what matters. At the same time this means you shouldn’t care about compliments and positive feedback as well. The paradox is that you need those positive reviews to let people know you have new music out. Although this continues to be a struggle, I feel I have found the attitude now where I start to care less about what others think of something I created, when I believe it is great.

What about the opinion of your children then?
They always hear my songs first. They actually really liked a track called ‘Loser of the Unicorns’ that did not make it on the album, but we will actually play it during the tour! It is great to see how they have an opinion on the new record as well. For example they really love ‘Indian Summer’. They are also a fan of ‘Another Life’, which I didn’t really like myself when I just wrote it. Reyn Ouwehand loved the swinging vibe of it and the same goes for my children, who love to dance to it!

Interview Sandra van Nieuwland: “Je moet nooit iets niet doen, omdat je bang bent voor kritiek”

Sandra van Nieuwland bracht in november haar derde plaat Breaking New Ground op de markt. De zangeres die groots doorbrak dankzij The Voice of Holland begon voor haar gevoel weer helemaal opnieuw en gaat in januari het theater in om het album te promoten. Wij spraken Sandra over het ontstaan van het album, het streven naar een moedig leven en het omgaan met kritiek.

Je bracht in november je plaat Breaking New Ground uit. Wat is er allemaal nieuw aan?
Voor het maken van dit album besloot ik bij 8ball weg te gaan en stond alles weer even op losse schroeven. Ik denk eigenlijk dat je bij elke nieuwe plaat weer helemaal opnieuw begint. Het schrijven beslaat sowieso een nieuwe periode in je leven. Je gaat verder met nieuwe dingen die je hebt geleerd, dus de titel Breaking New Ground komt niet helemaal uit de lucht vallen. Het is weer een volledig nieuwe fase in mijn carrière.

Ben je ook op een geheel andere manier te werk gegaan voor deze plaat?
Gedeeltelijk wel. De vorige plaat was vooral geschreven met Tjeerd Bomhof en hoewel ik deze keer ook met hem heb samengewerkt, schreef ik nu ook veel met David en James van het Londense duo The Nexus. We hadden een goede klik samen en dat is niet vanzelfsprekend. Het toevallige was dat ik de productie van de zang op dit album graag in de stijl van Beth Orton en Kristina Train wilde en toen vertelden ze mij doodleuk dat ze net een liedje met Kristina Train hadden opgenomen. Het leek dus haast wel voorbestemd.

In ‘Stop The Clocks’ spoor je iemand of jezelf aan om van je tijd te genieten, omdat het snel voorbij kan zijn. Waar kwam die bewustwording vandaan?
Ik zie het als een pas op de plaats, een moment waarop je even uitzoomt en naar jezelf kijkt. Dat kan je doen na een vervelende gebeurtenis, maar gebeurt ook weleens zomaar. Dan sta ik stil bij wat ik wil uitdragen en niet alleen in mijn carrière. Op basis daarvan moet je beslissingen durven maken en zonder angst ergens in stappen. Ik zeg niet dat mij dit zelf altijd lukt, maar ik streef ernaar moedig te leven en dat komt veel terug in de teksten van de liedjes op de plaat.

Wat is het meest persoonlijke liedje op het album, waarvan je misschien zelfs twijfelde of je het wel wilde delen?
Vaak als je die twijfel hebt, moet je het juist wel doen, omdat het dan zeker iets bijzonders is. Dat had ik bij ‘Mona Lisa’. Ik vind het altijd moeilijk om liedjes uit te leggen, maar de tekst heeft een dubbele lading waarin een belangrijk persoon voor mij een nieuwe toekomst opbouwt zonder mij en met iemand anders. De persoon die ik daarbij in gedachte had, bleek achteraf qua naam ook nog eens zeer in de buurt te komen van de titel van het lied, dus dat was helemaal ‘wicked’! Dat soort bizarre dingetjes heb ik wel vaker met Tjeerd. Het is erg persoonlijk, maar daarom ook een mooi verhaal.

Wat hoop jij dat luisteraars van dit album er voor zichzelf uithalen?
Het mooiste is voor mij als mensen zich kunnen identificeren met een liedje. Dat hoeft dan niet over hetzelfde te zijn als wat het voor mij betekent, maar als het ze raakt op wat voor manier dan ook, dat is waar je het voor doet! Als iemand steun kan hebben aan jouw tekst is dat het leukste wat er is. Ik probeer bij het schrijven dan ook dicht bij mezelf te blijven, maar tegelijkertijd zorg ik dat niet alles alleen over mezelf gaat, zodat anderen zich er ook in kunnen verplaatsen.

Je gaat in januari de theaters in met de nieuwe plaat. Wat kunnen mensen van de show verwachten?
Ik ga proberen visueel iets bijzonders neer te zetten. Ik wil weer een dynamische show maken, maar de bezetting zal dit keer niet zo groot zijn. Dat betekent echter niet dat er alleen maar rustige liedjes gespeeld zullen worden, hoor! Ik wil er een belevenis maken, maar zonder al te veel poespas.

Speel je eigenlijk liever in het theater dan in clubs?
In het theater kun je wel makkelijker een verhaal vertellen. Iedere nuance die je er in wilt leggen komt ook echt over. Het is verfijnder dan het spelen in een club, hoewel dat natuurlijk ook gaaf is, door de energie die je ervan krijgt. Toch vind ik dat je in het theater meer mogelijkheden hebt voor details, ook qua beeld. En uiteindelijk kun je daar ook prima knallen!

Iets heel anders… Zou je het songfestival overwegen als je gevraagd wordt?
Overwegen zeker! Ik zei eerst altijd nee, want het leek me doodeng om de aandacht die ik bij The Voice kreeg nog eens een miljoen keer uitvergroot mee te maken. Toch vind ik dat je nooit iets niet moet doen, omdat je bang bent voor kritiek, dus dat zou voor mij nooit een reden zijn om het af te wijzen. Als je het juiste liedje hebt moet je het gewoon doen.

Welke van deze plaat zou je kiezen?
Ik zou dan gaan voor het grootse van ‘Indian Summer’ of juist iets kleins en breekbaars als ‘Stop The Clocks’. Je moet iets doen wat er net uitspringt en anders is dan de rest, zoals Anouk en The Common Linnets ook deden en het is gaaf als dat lukt! Het is een mooie kans om je muziek aan miljoenen mensen te laten horen en ik zou het mezelf nooit vergeven als ik me dan laat tegenhouden door het circus eromheen.

Zou je je teveel aantrekken van wat iedereen van jou en je liedje vindt?
Ik vind eigenlijk dat recensies er helemaal niet toe zouden moeten doen, omdat je als artiest iets maakt waar je zelf achterstaat en je doet het voor de mensen die er uiteindelijk van kunnen genieten. Als je kritiek niet belangrijk vindt, moet je je dus ook niet laten leiden door complimenten. Tegelijkertijd heb je de positieve verhalen wel weer nodig om je muziek aan de man te brengen, dus dat blijft altijd lastig. Toch heb ik nu wel de houding dat als ik zelf iets heb gemaakt wat ik erg vet vind, dat het me minder interesseert als iemand anders er negatief over is.

Luister je wel naar de mening van je kinderen over je muziek?
Die horen alles als eerst en waren vooral fan van een liedje wat uiteindelijk niet op de plaat belandde, ‘Loser of the Unicorns’. Dat gaan we trouwens wel spelen in het theater! Het is leuk om te merken dat ze over deze plaat ook weer een mening hebben en bijvoorbeeld ‘Indian Summer’ helemaal te gek vinden. Ze vinden ‘Another Life’ ook erg leuk en dat had ik zelf niet zo in het begin. Ik had het erover met Reyn Ouwehand en die vond het juist te gek, omdat het zo swingt en dat vonden de kinderen dus ook, want daar kunnen ze lekker op dansen!
