Eurovision 2016 Review: Australia: Dami Im – Sound of Silence

Dami Im Sound of Silence

Australia sounds power ballad to Stockholm
After the success of Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest last year at their first participation, with ‘Tonight Again’ by Guy Sebastian, the country was invited once more to participate, this time around starting in the semi finals. In the Sydney Opera House during a Conchita Wurst show, it was announced that X Factor winner Dami Im would represent the country. She showed the audience in the iconic venue how powerful her vocals are with a live rendition of ‘Waterloo’, but now we can finally hear the song she will perform in Stockholm in May. Safe to say Australia will do a good job again!

It is no secret that Dami Im has an incredible voice and she actually puts it to good use in ‘Sound of Silence’. The midtempo power anthem has some serious belting towards the end which no doubt will make an impression on Europe when performed live on stage. The production is contemporary, reminding of the hit singles of fellow Australian Sia. I am not saying ‘Sound of Silence’ is as strong as say, ‘Chandelier’, as it is not, but in terms of build up, dramatic moments and overall heartfelt performance, this should be enough for another top 10 result with a strong performance. The only thing that bugs me a little about this song is the repeating of the title in the chorus, but pronounced in different ways. I am sure I will forgive Dami if she gives us the flawless vocals we love though!

Update: Dami Im vocally impressed on her first rehearsals and as she has one of the best songs in the competition, she should go far. The bookmakers predict her to win the second semi final and reach top 3 in the final.
