Démira started her career with her participation in the talent show The Best Singer-Songwriter of the Netherlands. The only 18-years-old singer finished high school, started working on new music and is now ready to fully concentrate on her career. She just released the EP White Ravens and A Bit of Pop Music chatted with her about the making of the record, inspiring young people and what it is like to work as an independent artist.

What does the title White Ravens mean to you?
I was quite fascinated by the idea of the white raven and started to do a little research. I found out that they were actual creatures and read the myths of the ancient Greeks where they were cursed and turned black. They used to be seen as the bringers of light and prosperity. These days we don’t really see ravens as something positive and I found this contradiction interesting. The EP itself is full of contradictions and layers so White Ravens perfectly fits the whole body of work.

Tell me more about writing the first single ‘Dragons’ and the meaning of the song…
‘Dragons’ was written in Copenhagen one and a half years ago, when most of the EP was born. I met a guy who became a close friend. We would exchange a lot of music and he let me hear the synthpop duo Chairlift. Their music inspired the lyrics for ‘Dragons’. The song is basically about finding comfort and safety in fantasies and illusions, something that protects you in the turbulent society of today, but in a kind of childish manner. I literally sing that I play with dragons and that I will let them breathe fire when you defy me. Sounds like the way children argue with each other at school. Of course these are not songs made for children, but language is a great method to speak to peoples’ fantasies.

How did you come up with the idea to use the book ‘The Collector’ by John Fowles for the song ‘Trophy’?
I was reading that book and I really loved the way it was written. It is extreme and very dark, but I secretly really appreciate that in stories. I read it in a time that I felt isolated at school. I still had a shot at graduating high school cum laude, and because this is a big deal for the reputation of a school, the counsil wanted me to attend every class and stop performing. They made it really hard for me to go on stage. They closed that door for me and I felt people started doubting me, which I did myself as well. I experienced isolation, which let me identify with the girl who was locked up in ‘The Collector’. Of course for me it was only a state of mind. In the end it brought me a lot of inspiration, as I wrote a lot of new tunes in that period.

The ‘Abaddon’ lyrics are inspired by the Neue Deutsche Welle. Do you think it influenced your sound as well?
Sonically not really as I do not work with synthesizers a lot, but the image of the Neue Deutsche Welle is amazing! I love how it is one big act of protest and critically analyzes society. They tried to put a statement out there and wanted to be free from whatever box society wants to lock you up in. It takes guts to do that. That idea inspired me immensely.

Do you see yourself going in a more electronical direction with synths in the future?
Definitely! I already experimented a little with such a sound on the song ‘Fountain’. I love the vibe of that track and I would certainly like to explore that even further. Maybe I will use another name for such a project, as Démira is now mostly known for the folk sound. I am also working on another project for which I am writing an electronical symphony. I can not tell you a lot about it yet, but believe me when I say it is going to be big!

In what way would you say you grew the most as an artist since participating in The Best Singer-Songwriter of the Netherlands?
I always used to write songs that were like little stories. When I was younger I actually wanted to become a writer of childrens books. Those singer-songwriter songs about broken hearts were not for me. I experienced a turning point when I wrote ‘Dinosaurs’ and realized it was actually completely about me. White Ravens is extremely personal and every song is about me, which kind of shocked me at first as it was never my intention. I try to put experiences to words that exceed the boundaries of language and this can be hard.

The videos for ‘Dragons’ and ‘Trophy’ look like you put a lot of effort in the visual side of your work. What was it like to record them?
For both videos I worked with director Sjoerd Boonstra. We had a very small team with only a few actors and a make up artist. My mother took care of all the costumes. She kept working until I was completely satisfied with the result. The great aspect of working with people who are really close to you, is that they give me space to work out my ideas until I think it is perfect. I had a clear view of the visuals I wanted for both songs and Sjoerd helped me realize them.

Do you experience trouble with having to do so much work on your own as well?
I only work with a booker and an online promotor and I even do my own management. Of course sometimes it is hard, but it is great to see people appreciate a young girl going to the radio stations herself to promote her music. This is exactly what I want to show other young people, especially the girls. They are often discouraged and made insecure by media ideals or the people around them. This stops them from following their dreams and I want to show that you can actually achieve your goals when you work for it and dare to do it on your own terms. Luckily my parents have always supported me for the full 100 percent and that feels great!

Do you think you want to keep working like this or do you look forward to sign with a label as well?
We start to reach the max of what we can actually handle ourselves, so it would be great to get some help from a label. At the same time I really enjoy taking care of the financial side of my career myself as well and it taught me a lot about how the industry works. Of course a label can bring you more opportunities, but I only want to work with people who truly believe in my music and are passionate about working on my career.

Can we expect your debut album any time soon?
This all depends on how White Ravens will do, but at the moment things are going really well. After our performance in a Dutch talk show, the EP was itop 3 in the Dutch iTunes list. If we can continue like that and my fan base will grow, an album will be the next step. Either way, we already have a single ready to release after the promotion of the EP, so there is definitely new music coming!

Interview Démira: “Ik wil jonge mensen laten zien dat je zelfstandig je dromen na kunt jagen”

Démira werd in haar thuisland bij het grote publiek bekend door haar deelname aan De Beste Singer-Songwrite van Nederland. Ze maakte haar middelbare school af, werkte aan nieuwe muziek en de 18-jarige zangeres is nu helemaal klaar voor het grote werk. Ze lanceerde vorige week haar nieuwe EP White Ravens en A Bit of Pop Music sprak met haar over het ontstaan van de plaat, het inspireren van jonge mensen en het werken als onafhankelijke artiest.

Waar komt de titel White Ravens vandaan?
Ik was gefascineerd door het idee van witte raven en ging er meer over opzoeken en las de mythes over de oude Grieken en hoe de raven zwart werden door een vloek. Ze werden ooit gezien als de engelen op aarde die licht en voorspoed brachten. Tegenwoordig zien we raven niet per se als iets positiefs en dat vond ik een mooie tegenstelling. De EP zit vol tegenstellingen en lagen en gezien ik altijd erg bezig ben met taal en tekst, vond ik White Ravens goed passen als overkoepelend orgaan.

Hoe is de eerste single ‘Dragons’ ontstaan?
We schreven ‘Dragons’ anderhalf jaar geleden tijdens een sessie in Kopenhagen, waar overigens de hele plaat is geboren. Ik ontmoette een jongen met wie ik een sterke band opbouwde en veel muziek uitwisselde. Hij liet mij het synthpop duo Chairlift horen, en qua tekst werd ik door hun muziek geïnspireerd. Het lied gaat over het vinden van veiligheid en vertrouwen in waanbeelden en illusies, een soort bescherming in een turbulente maatschappij op een kinderlijke manier. Ik zing dat ik met draken speel en dat als je me uitdaagt, ik ze vuur zal laten spuwen. Een beetje zoals kinderen elkaar proberen te overtreffen op het schoolplein! Het zijn natuurlijk geen kinderliedjes, maar ik vind tekst een mooi middel om mensen aan te spreken en ze tegelijkertijd hun eigen fantasie erop los te laten gaan.

Hoe kwam je op het idee om het boek ‘The Collector’ van John Fowles als inspiratie te gebruiken voor het lied ‘Trophy’?
Ik las dat boek en vond het heel tof en mooi geschreven. Het is extreem en luguber, maar daar heb ik in verhalen stiekem een beetje een voorkeur voor. Ik las het in een tijd dat ik me op de middelbare school behoorlijk geïsoleerd voelde. Ik was cum laude kandidaat en omdat dit zwaar weegt voor de reputatie van een school, mocht ik van de leiding niet veel meer absent zijn voor mijn optredens. Ze hebben enorm lopen touwtrekken en mij het heel moeilijk gemaakt om het podium op te gaan. Zij gooiden dat boek voor mij dicht en ik kreeg het idee dat mensen aan mij gingen twijfelen, dus toen begon ik dat zelf ook te doen. Toen kreeg ik een gevoel van isolatie, net als het meisje in ‘The Collector’ dat in de kelder belandt. Gelukkig was het voor mij enkel psychisch. Het heeft uiteindelijk wel voor veel inspiratie gezorgd, want in die periode schreef ik veel voor de EP.

‘Abaddon’ is qua tekst geïnspireerd op de Neue Deutsche Welle. Denk je dat je sound er ook door beïnvloed is?
Qua geluid niet per se omdat ik weinig met synths werk, maar het image van de Neue Deutsche Welle vind ik fantastisch. Ik vind vooral de protestactie en het maatschappijkritische aspect erg gaaf. Ze probeerden een statement te maken en zich vrij te vechten van alle kaders en daar moet je ballen voor hebben. Dat idee op zich heb ik veel inspiratie uit kunnen halen.

Zou je zelf ooit meer de elektronische kant met synthesizers op willen gaan in je eigen muziek?
Ja zeker! Ik heb er al lichtelijk mee geëxperimenteerd op het lied ‘Fountain’. Die vibe vind ik helemaal te gek en zou daar zeker meer mee willen doen, misschien onder een andere naam, omdat Démira vooral bekend staat als folk. Ik werk tegelijkertijd wel aan een ander project waarvoor ik een elektronische symfonie moet schrijven. Ik kan er nog niet teveel over zeggen, maar dat wordt heel groots!

“Vooral jonge meisjes zijn vaak gevoelig voor bepaalde mediabeelden van wat de norm is, of hun omgeving maakt hen onzeker en weerhoudt hen zo van het najagen van hun dromen. Ik wil juist laten zien dat je ervoor moet gaan, de stoute schoenen aan moet trekken en zo je doel kunt bereiken.”

Waarin vind je zelf dat je het meeste bent gegroeid sinds je deelname aan de Beste Singer-Songwriter van Nederland?
Ik begon met het schrijven van verhalende liedjes. Ik wilde ooit zelfs kinderboekenschrijfster worden. Dat geneuzel over liefdesverdriet vond ik zelf maar niets. De ommekeer kwam voor mezelf bij ‘Dinosaurs’. Toen realiseerde ik dat ik een lied had geschreven dat toch echt volledig over mezelf ging. White Ravens is belachelijk persoonlijk en gaat alleen maar over mezelf en daar schrok ik zelf eerst wel even van, want dat was nooit mijn intentie. Ik probeer ervaringen te beschrijven die verder gaan dan woorden en dat is soms best lastig.

In de video’s voor ‘Dragons’ en ‘Trophy’ is veel moeite gestoken en het resultaat is mystiek en filmisch. Hoe was het om deze op te nemen?
Ik heb voor beide clips samengewerkt met regisseur Sjoerd Boonstra. We hadden echt maar een miniteam met een paar acteurs en een visagiste. Mijn moeder heeft alle kleding verzorgd en bleef net zolang prutsen tot ik helemaal tevreden was. Het fijne aan het werken met mensen dichtbij je, is dat alle ideeën van mijzelf komen en dat ik ruimte krijg die uit te werken. Ik had een duidelijk beeld van de visuals die het beste pasten bij de liedjes en met behulp van Sjoerd heb ik het ook zo kunnen uitwerken.

Is het ook weleens lastig om alles te doen met weinig hulp van anderen?
Ik werk nu met een booker en een online promotor en het management doe ik helemaal zelf. Hoewel het soms zwaar is, is het ook leuk om te zien dat mensen het waarderen dat een jong meisje als ik bij de radio langsgaat om haar eigen muziek te promoten, in plaats van de grote labels. Dit definieert ook wat ik wil uitdragen, want ik zou graag een voorbeeld voor mensen van mijn leeftijd willen zijn. Vooral jonge meiden zijn vaak gevoelig voor bepaalde mediabeelden van wat de norm is, of hun omgeving maakt hen onzeker en weerhoudt hen zo van het najagen van hun dromen. Ik wil juist laten zien dat je ervoor moet gaan, de stoute schoenen aan moet trekken en zo je je doel op je eigen manier zelfstandig kunt bereiken. Mijn ouders hebben mij gelukkig altijd voor de volle honderd procent gesteund in mijn keuzes en dat is fantastisch.

Zou je het zo willen blijven doen of kijk je er ook wel naar uit te tekenen bij een label?
We beginnen nu wel het maximum te bereiken van wat we zelf kunnen dragen qua drukte, dus wat werk uit handen kunnen geven zou fijn zijn. Tegelijkertijd vind ik het zelf ook leuk om de economische kant te onderhouden en daardoor snap ik ook beter hoe de industrie van de achterkant in elkaar steekt. Natuurlijk heb je met een label wel meer ingangen, maar om te tekenen wil ik benaderd worden door mensen die echt gepassioneerd aan mijn carrière willen werken, omdat ze in mijn muziek geloven.

Kunnen we na de release van de EP ook je debuutalbum verwachten of is dat nog ver weg?
Dat ligt eraan hoe White Ravens ontvangen zal worden. Nu gaat het heel lekker, want na ons optreden in De Wereld Draait Door stonden we zelfs in de top 3 van iTunes. Als dit zo doorgaat en ik mijn fanbase kan uitbreiden komt er zeker weten een album. We hebben in ieder geval alweer een single klaarliggen voor na het promoten van de EP, dus nieuwe muziek komt er zeker!
