Always wondered what pop stars themselves listen to whenever they are not on stage or writing new music? It’s time to find out! Every week, A Bit of Pop Music will bring you Friday’s Five Tunes, a selection of five favourite songs by a current pop artist. This week’s selection is by Celine Cairo.

Celine Cairo is a Dutch singer-songwriter who has been working her way up in the music industry since 2010, when she released her debut EP. A second EP, on which she worked with FINK, appeared in 2013. Ever since she has been working hard on her debut album, which is expected at the end of this year. The first single ‘Hello Love‘ sounds more than promising already and she will start touring to promote the single soon. Meanwhile Celine gives us an insight in the music that inspires her, by selecting five of her favourite tunes of the moment!

Vaults – One Last Night
“When I was in LA last year to record my debut album, I heard this song everywhere and used to listen to it a lot myself as well. It is such an enchanting, beautiful track with a completely unique sound. The lyrics are abstract and very special at the same time while the tune as a whole is quite accessible. Just gorgeous!

Laurel – Shells
“This is such an alienating track to me and I can completely lose myself in it. Her voice is so tender and unique. The production towards the end is a bit unexpected, but it perfectly fits the dreamy vibe. Laurel is very interesting, one to watch!”

Polynation – Swell
“This track is such a beast! I know the guys of Polynation, but heard this track randomly and was immediately blown away. When I listen to this, I picture myself driving through the mountains. The raw elements in the song come close to the sound of FINK. It is such a cool, weird, electronic tune with a perfect build up.”

Vök – Waiting
“This is so cool! I deliberately share some newer stuff hear, because there are so many great songs coming out these days. Vök is one of those acts I expect big things for. I recognize myself in the sound of this song, as this is what my band can sound like as well. My vocal delivery might be a bit different, but I can really appreciate it when a voice sounds unpretentious and really melts with the music.”

The Weepies – Gotta Have You
“I rediscovered this song recently. This is one of the best songs ever written if you ask me. Those lyrics!! I get instant goosebumps when the chorus comes around. I heard it quite a couple of times, before I knew who the artist was. Maybe I will cover this one day! I keep myself busy with a lot of songwriting. Next to the sound or the artist, a song can mean so much and move you. This song for example: you can do with it what you want, it will always be brilliant.”

Celine Cairo timmert al jaren succesvol aan de weg in het Nederlandse poplandschap. Na twee EP’s, waarvan de tweede werd opgenomen met de Britse muzikant en producer FINK, vertrok Cairo naar Los Angeles om haar debuutplaat op te nemen, die eind dit jaar verschijnt. De eerste single is het krachtige ‘Hello Love’, dat onlangs van een sfeervolle video werd voorzien. Aan A Bit of Pop Music vertelt ze over de muziek die haar heeft geïnspireerd, in de vorm van vijf liedjes.

Vaults – One Last Night
“Toen ik vorig jaar 6 weken in LA was om mijn debuutalbum op te nemen was dit nummer overal te horen en draaide ik het in mijn vrije tijd voortdurend. Ik vind het zo’n sprookjesachtig mooi nummer, met een hele eigen sound. De tekst is bijzonder en abstract terwijl het geheel voelt als een heel toegankelijk nummer. Beeldschoon vind ik het.”

Laurel – Shells
“Dit nummer vind ik zo vervreemdend, ik kan er helemaal in opgaan. Haar stem is heel zacht en bijzonder, de productie aan het eind heeft een beetje een rare smaak maar past mooi bij de dromerigheid van de rest van de track. Interessante nieuwe artiest!”

Polynation – Swell
“Ik vind dit zo’n BEEST van een track! Ik ken de jongens van Polynation toevallig maar hoorde dit ergens voorbij komen en was helemaal blown away. Ik zie een reis door de bergen voor me, en dan uitkomen op een plateau waar je veel te hard rijdt met deze track op. De rauwere elementen hebben een bijna Fink-Achtig gevoel maar het is is echt een vette, weirde elektronische track die heel lekker opbouwt.”

Vök – Waiting
“Dit is echt te vet. Ik deel hier bewust wat nieuwere dingen omdat ik vind dat er zoveel vette dingen uitkomen. Vök is een van de acts die ik nog heel groot zie worden. Ik herken mezelf heel erg in de sound van deze track, mijn band kan ook deze richting op klinken. Ik ben zelf wat zangeres-iger maar waardeer het heel erg als vocals pretentie-loos zijn en zich echt in de muziek vlechten.”

The Weepies – Gotta Have You
“Deze herontdekte ik laatst weer. Dit vind ik echt een van de mooist geschreven nummers aller tijden. Die tekst!! Ik kreeg instant kippenvel toen het refrein inkwam. Vroeger heb ik het wel veel gehoord maar nooit echt geweten van wie het nou was. Misschien wel een idee om een keer te coveren! Ik ben veel bezig met songwriting. Naast de sound en wie de artiest is, kan een nummer op zich ook zo veel in zich hebben en met je doen. Dit nummer kun je echt binnenstebuiten keren en het is nog steeds briljant.”
