Douwe Bob takes time to reflect on third record
While Douwe Bob is busy rehearsing for his participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm, his Dutch (and European) fans are in for a treat with the release of his third album Fool Bar. The record sees the light of day, not even a year after the release of the sophomore effort Pass It On. Seems like Douwe Bob isn’t really slowing down after all!
Well, the ‘best singer-songwriter of the Netherlands’ might be working hard on creating music, he still wants to encourage the European viewers to slow down a little bit and not to put too much pressure on themselves. This will be symbolically underlined by a 10 seconds break within the performance. The whole taking your time to step back and reflect theme is not only apparent on the seventies country inspired catchy Eurovision song, but throughout the whole new record. The title of the perfect, midtempo second single ‘How Lucky We Are’ says it all. Douwe Bob realizes in a simply beautiful chorus, that he is actually blessed with all that happens around him. Vocally this is one his best moments on the album.
On the more uptempo ‘Settle Down’ he describes how he enjoys his fast life in the city, but at the same time states he has got ‘the feeling I can’t get out’. All this reflecting on life, apparently helps Douwe Bob with finding out what he does and doesn’t want, put clearly on the rocking track ‘Get Real’. “Do I have to go to Nashville to sound real? I‘m not gonna lie I like my name in neon lights. You see I’d go with you if you’re going my way”, he sings with confidence. The overall message of Fool Bar is once again touched upon here: “Running faster doesn’t mean you can’t fall behind.”
The title of the record refers to the place in the home of Douwe Bob’s father where he drinks beers with his friends and makes music. The Dutch Eurovision hopeful opened a bar in Stockholm for the period of Eurovision and wants to have his own establishment in Amsterdam when he returns. A bar like he has in mind, with live music of course, is where the songs on Fool Bar would really come to life. From the heartbreaking ballad ‘Jacob’s Song’ to the swinging country of ‘A Damn Good Time’ and from the slow guitar track ‘Cynic’ to the naughty ‘Take It Off’, they sound great on record, but the best way to consume this music is through a performance in a small room. Please open this bar Douwe and sing your heart out! We’ll be there!

Douwe Bob neemt tijd om te reflecteren op derde album
Terwijl Douwe Bob momenteel druk bezig is met repeteren voor het Eurovisie Songfestival in Stockholm, worden zijn Nederlandse (en inmiddels ook Europese) fans getrakteerd op een gloednieuw album, Fool Bar getiteld. Deze plaat verschijnt op de markt, nog geen jaar nadat hij met de tweede, Pass It On, op de proppen kwam. Het lijkt erop dat Douwe in zijn carrière zelf nog niet aan het afremmen is, maar dat is wel zijn boodschap op zowel dit album als het songfestival.
Hoewel ‘de beste singer-songwriter van Nederland’ zelf zeker niet stil zit, wil hij het Europese publiek op het hart drukken het wat rustiger aan te doen en niet teveel druk op te leggen bij jezelf. Dit wordt symbolisch onderstreept door de tien seconden pauze in zijn optreden. Het hele thema van een stap terugnemen en reflecteren op je leven staat centraal, niet alleen op het op jaren ’70 country geïnspireerde ‘Slow Down’, maar eigenlijk op de gehele plaat. Neem nou de perfecte, midtempo tweede single ‘How Lucky We Are’. De titel zegt eigenlijk al genoeg! Douwe Bob realiseert zich in een beeldschoon refrein dat hij zich gelukkig mag prijzen met alles dat om hem heen gebeurt. Vocaal is dit zeker één van zijn beste momenten op de plaat.
Op het swingende ‘Settle Down’ beschrijft hij hoe hij geniet van het stadse leven, maar realiseert zich tegelijkertijd dat hij er eigenlijk niet meer aan kan ontsnappen. Dit reflecteren op het leven helpt Douwe Bob in het uitvinden wat hij wel en niet wil, wat hij op het gebied van zijn carrière duidelijk stelt in rockende ‘Get Real’. “Do I have to go to Nashville to sound real? I‘m not gonna lie I like my name in neon lights. You see I’d go with you if you’re going my way”, zingt hij vol overtuiging. De overkoepelende boodschap van de plaat komt hier nogmaals terug: “Running faster doesn’t mean you can’t fall behind.”
De titel van de plaat refereert naar de plaats in het huis van Douwe’s vader, waar hij graag biertjes drinkt en muziek maakt met zijn vrienden. Momenteel heeft hij ook een bar in Stockholm geopend voor de duur van het songfestival en dit wil hij graag voortzetten als hij terugkeert naar Amsterdam. Zo’n bar als hij in zijn hoofd heeft, uiteraard met live muziek, is de plaats waar de liedjes op Fool Bar nog het beste tot hen recht zouden komen. Van het hartbrekende ‘Jacob’s Song’ tot de swingende country van ‘A Damn Good Time’ en van het verstilde ‘Cynic’ naar het ondeugende ‘Take It Off’, voor allemaal geldt dat ze als een klok klinken op plaat, maar nog meer tot bloei zouden komen, wanneer live gespeeld in een klein donker café. Open die bar maar gauw Douwe Bob, wij komen zeker langs!
