Tove Lo is back with sexy and infectious ‘Cool Girl’
Although it is already two years ago that Tove Lo released her debut album Queen of the Clouds, it feels like she has never really been away. Not so surprising if you see what the Swedish pop star has been up to in the past two years. She contributed songs to the soundtracks of The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay pt. 1 and The Divergent Series: Allegiant and sang on collaborations with Coldplay, Adam Lambert, Flume, Broods, Years & Years and Nick Jonas. She surely kept herself busy, as she was working on new material at the same time. We now get the first taste of this with the release of the first single of her sophomore album, ‘Cool Girl’.
Now first of all, if you expect to be blown away by a huge soaring chorus with big, emotive vocals like on her biggest hit ‘Habits’, you might need a warning first. That is not at all what ‘Cool Girl’ is about. On first listen I have to admit I was slightly disappointed by the understated nature of the chorus, but by the third time it already creeped up on me and you can’t help but sing along: “Imma cool girl, ice cold I roll my eyes at you boy!”. The verses are very melodic and the production gets sexier and sexier throughout the tune, until it ends with heavy vocal effects. The whole vibe feels effortlessly cool and so smooth and sensual. She sure is one of the coolest girls out there in the pop scene at the moment!
Update: Tove Lo explained to Rolling Stone how the new single is inspired by Rosamund Pike’s ‘cool girl’ monologue in the movie Gone Girl. “She’s gone full psycho, and she’s sitting there talking about ‘He wanted a cool girl, so I ate pizza. I drank beer. I made a size two. I didn’t give a fuck that he checked out other women.’ I was thinking about it, and it’s really true. Why do we try to be someone we’re not to make someone love us? Would you want to fake yourself for the rest of your life? That’s fucked up. Even though she’s creepy, I kind of thought it was funny that it’s just very common to see that.” This all makes the song even better, doesn’t it!?
Update: The video is out and it shows Cool Girl Tove Lo climbing cars and even shave her head!
