Video Review: Snakehips feat. Zayn – Cruel

Zayn Cruel Snakehips

Snakehips and Zayn launch video for ‘Cruel’
Last month, Zayn already surprised us with some new music. The former One Direction star launched his solo debut Mind of Mine in March of which single ‘Pillowtalk’ became a worldwide hit, but only a few months later a collaboration with Snakehips surfaced online and now they launched a video for ‘Cruel’ as well. This British electronic duo is mostly known for their hit ‘All My Friends’ featuring Tinashe and Chance the Rapper and are aiming even higher with this new track.

The electronic production of ‘Cruel’ is a perfect match for Zayn’s smooth and sultry vocal style. He grabs the listener with his first lines and the swinging instrumentation (that drop midway through, amazing!) is right on the money these days. It perfectly shows off Zayn’s huge potential after a brave debut album that with all the right intentions, still was quite hit and miss. In the video, Zayn maintains the nonchalant and stoic image with a lack of facial expressions and minimal effort to lip sync, which we saw in the music video for ‘Pillowtalk’ as well. Luckily it does not affect the video that much, as it still is a colourful ride through fences and tv screens, passing all kinds of night life scenes, with Zayn laying his eyes on a girl watching CCTV. The camera work has some eye catching moments and the choreography scenes are a highlight. Let’s hope this helps the track climb the charts a little more, because this is way too good to not become a worldwide smash.
