Single Review: Christina Aguilera – Telepathy (feat. Nile Rodgers)

Christina Aguilera Change 2

Christina Aguilera goes disco on Nile Rodgers collaboration
When Baz Luhrmann puts his name to a movie or series as director, the soundtrack is just as important as the visual product. After a star studded soundtrack for his movie The Great Gatsby with the likes of BeyoncĂ© and Lana Del Rey, he managed to collect a strong list of names for his new project, the Netflix original series The Get Down. From Zayn to Michael Kiwanuka and from Miguel to Christina Aguilera, they all delivered a song for the series. Aguilera worked with Chic’s Nile Rodgers on the infectious disco throwback ‘Telepathy’.

Christina Aguilera made a return to the music scene earlier this year when she dedicated her track ‘Change’ to the victims of the Orlando shooting. After this emotional and socially reflective ballad, we now get some swinging disco from the pop star, with help of Stargate (production) and Sia (lyrics). Who would have thought her powerhouse vocals match the funky guitars and the typical 70s productions so well!? Vocally, she owns this genre like a true disco diva from this period. ‘Telepathy’ is a catchy little tune with a chorus that settles in your mind easily and is harder to get out with every listen. No doubt this works well in the context of the story of the series as well, which deals with the historic rise of hiphop and the end of the disco era. This is an interesting direction for Aguilera and makes me curious to hear the material of her upcoming studio album!
