Single Review: Tom Chaplin – Hardened Heart

Tom Chaplin The Wave

Tom Chaplin announces solo debut album and drops first single
It has been ages since we heard anything from Keane. The ‘Somewhere Only We Know’, ‘Everybody’s Changing’ and ‘Is It Any Wonder’ hit makers released their most recent record, Strangeland, in 2012 and announced a temporary break. Today we find out why, because leadsinger Tom Chaplin steps forward with the first results of his solo career. He announces the release of his debut album The Wave on the 14th of October and launched his first single and video ‘Hardened Heart’.

Chaplin wrote the track together with composer MaxMcElligott and it is a bombastic and powerful piece of singer-songwriter pop. Compared to the work of Keane, the piano is not nearly as prominent, but at the same time it is not miles away from the sound of his band. Chaplin definitely has one of the most unique and instantly recognizable pop vocals of his generation and he puts them to good use with a passionate performance on ‘Hardened Heart’. The song seems to be about breaking through a period of depression, no longer hurting the people around you and starting to appreciate life again. “I know that my hardened heart is beating still, I drove it to the point of madness just to feel something real”, Chaplin concludes. A hopeful and uplifting first single that makes me eagerly looking forward for more!
