Say Lou Lou cover ‘Stayin’ Alive’ as new single
Say Lou Lou made a brave decision when it comes to the release of their new single. A year after their dreamy and sultry cover of Bobby Vinton’s ‘Blue On Blue’, the singing Swedish-Australian twin sisters decided to make a bigger classic their own. Their new single is a cover of the disco classic ‘Stayin’ Alive’ by the Beegees. Covering such a legendary song is a risky move and could go horribly wrong, but it seems these girls can do no harm. Their version of ‘Stayin’ Alive’ is actually one of the best covers I have heard in a long time!
Forget everything you know about the original and listen to this Say Lou Lou record with fresh ears. The pace is a bit slower, but it is still groovy as hell. You have never heard Say Lou Lou sound so heavy on bass and drums before, but after this you never want to go without. The vibe this gives off is so laidback it flirts a little bit with reggae and the funk in the original comes back in a completely different way. All this combined with the heavenly dreamy vocals of the twins (especially in the ‘alive’ at the end of the chorus) make for an unexpected, risky, but brilliant cover. The final edit of the song is presented as being a jam session and this underlines the use of a band instead of electronic production which we are used to from the girls. There is no word on a new album yet, but here’s hoping they don’t make us wait too long!
