Dutch sisters invite you to a dark world of mysterious indie pop
In the recent history of pop music, there has been quite a few successful bands consisting of sisters. Take for example Australian duo The Veronicas, the folky Swedish sisters of First Aid Kit, Swedish-Australian twin sisters Say Lou Lou or the three ladies Haim. From the Netherlands we now have Lia and Lena Göçer, releasing music under the band name LIANA. They first made an impression online with a flawless cover of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Cola’, but since two years the sisters have been producing their own music in which they invite you to a dark and mysterious world with their dreamy indie pop. They just released the brand new single ‘Hide & Seek’, complete with music video.

In the fall of 2014 Lia and Lena launched their first EP titled I’ll Rip Your Heart Out. The girls described their own music as Lana Del Rey playing a set by The XX and that is exactly what the title track channels. Needless to say it is glorious with its moody atmosphere, crystal clear emotive vocals and vivacious melodies. The sisters are working on new material for a second EP at the moment and ‘Hide & Seek’ is the first taste. With this single LIANA’s sound evolves with more electronic influences, operating in a similar soundscape to for example BANKS.

The heartbreaking piece of electronic pop has a special meaning to the girls. “The track is about losing yourself in the grief you experience after losing a loved one. It is very personal and emotional to us”, they explain to A Bit of Pop Music. The beats are on point, the vocals beautifully layered and straight from the heart and towards the end oriental sounding strings take over. ‘Hide & Seek’ perfectly showcases what LIANA is capable of and I can’t wait to hear more!
