The Chainsmokers and Coldplay team up for new single
2017 is not even two months in and we might have heard the most unexpected collaboration of the year already. And no, I am not referring to Frank Ocean who will feature on Calvin Harris’ new single, which I did not see coming either. I’m talking about The Chainsmokers, who are collaborating with Coldplay on their brand new single ‘Something Just Like This’. After their world wide hits ‘Closer’ with Halsey and ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ with Daya and more recently ‘Paris’, they secured themselves another one by collaborating with one of the most popular bands in the world.

Does this at the same time mean ‘Something Just Like This‘ is a great single? Not necessarily. The Chainsmokers do what they do best, which is catchy EDM crossed with pop hooks and predictable breakdowns at the end of the chorus. The only major difference here is that the hooks are provided by Chris Martin’s characteristic vocals this time. And said hooks are not even that strong! The breakdown is something we have heard a hundred times before, even on the Chainsmokers’ own singles. It seems a bit lazy to just do a bit of copy pasting when you are recording with Coldplay. It is hard to understand what is in it for Chris Martin and his men. They don’t really need the Chainsmokers in order to get a hit and this sounds even more generic than their own latest album. Having said that, I’m sure this will spend quite some time at the top of the international charts.
