The Weeknd brings sex, drugs and rock and roll to Ziggo Dome
Last weekend marked the first big headlining show by Abel Tasfaye, better known as The Weeknd, in Amsterdam. As part of his Starboy: The Legend of the Fall tour, he performed in a sold out Ziggo Dome, promoting his latest album Starboy. The album full of collaborations with artists like Daft Punk, Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar and Future confirmed his status as one of the biggest stars on the planet of the moment and therefore it was about time he graced the Netherlands with his presence!
Exactly on time The Weeknd rises up from the stage of the Ziggo Dime while a spaceship like object comes down. It is about the only show element in The Weeknd’s sober but powerful performance. He is joined on stage by his band while he spends most of his time walking up and down the catwalk. Although Abel lost his characteristic dreads last year, he sure did not lose his charisma yet, as the girls in the front row seem completely in awe of their idol. Of course, the most important element of the night is his voice, which sometimes reminds the crowds of a young Michael Jackson. His more soulful tracks like ‘Ordinary Life’, ‘In the Night’ and even the latest single ‘I Feel It Coming’ with Daft Punk sound like they could have been recorded by the King of Pop, had he still been alive.
The audience in the Ziggo Dome is diverse to say the least, consisting of young girls as well as older fans, who all dance and sway along to tracks like ‘Often’ and ‘Earned It’. As if high and in a trance, couples move their bodies to the sensual ‘Can’t Feel My Face’. The intro of the hit ‘Starboy’ makes the crowd go wild and the sharp and deep beats of this strack make sure nobody is standing still. Of course one of his biggest hits, ‘The Hills’, followed soon, summarizing the elements that make up Abel’s persona as an artist: sex, drugs and rock & roll!
The Weeknd delivers a more than decent performance during his first big show in the Netherlands and the amount of fans that showed up reminds us of his meteoric rise over the past two years. Of course there is some room for improvement as well. There is still a lot to win for The Weeknd when it comes to interaction with his crowd. The singer hardly ever speaks to them directly and basically throws song after song at them, 28 to be exact! The crowd does not seem to mind at all though, as they are in awe of his voice from start to finish!

The Weeknd met sex, drugs en rock & roll in Amsterdam
Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd, was in Amsterdam! In een uitverkochte Ziggo Dome verzorgt hij als onderdeel van zijn Starboy: The legend of the Fall tour een prima concert. Het is zijn eerste wereldtour waar hij als hoofdact in Nederland optreed. Ter promotie van het album Starboy dat eind november 2016 verscheen en maar liefst 18 nieuwe tracks waaronder samenwerkingen met Kendrick Lamar, Daft Punk, Future en Lana Del Rey bevat, kreeg Nederland hem eindelijk op bezoek!
Het concert begint stipt om 21:15 en The Weeknd verschijnt vanuit de podium met daarboven een ruimteschip-achtig voorwerp dat neerdaalt. Meer gimmick heeft The Weeknd niet nodig. De zanger staat samen met zijn band op het podium en hij besteedt het meeste van zijn tijd met het heen en weer lopen over de catwalk. Ondanks dat Tesfaye zijn karakteristieke dreads inmiddels heeft verloren, is hij niet minder gewild bij zijn jonge vrouwelijke fans. Het is dan waarschijnlijk toch vooral de zwoele stem die hen kan bekoren! De dromerige klanken die The Weeknd laat horen, neigen naar de melancholische ballades van een jonge Michael Jackson. Zo klinken soulvolle nummers als ‘Ordinary Life’, ‘In the Night’ en zelfs zijn laatste hit ‘I Feel it Coming’ soms alsof de King of Pop nog leeft en dit ten gehore brengt.
Het publiek bestaat uit zowel jonge meiden als doorgewinterde bezoekers die de handen in de lucht gooien en enthousiast mee dansen op de beats van ‘Often’ en de sexy hit single ‘Earned It’. Stelletjes houden elkaar stevig vast en deinen mee met ‘Can’t Feel my Face’ alsof ze in extase zijn. Wanneer de eerste beats van Starboy worden ingezet, klinkt er een enorme gegil vanuit de hele zaal en de diepe beats zorgen ervoor dat niemand nog stil staat. Als apotheose krijgen we de echte Weeknd klassieker ‘The Hills’, afkomstig van zijn Beauty Behind the Madness album. Het lied somt simpelweg op waar hij als artiest voor staat: seks, drugs en rock & roll!
Houdt The Weeknd zich staande als solo headliner artiest met een overtuigende performance? Zeker! Het is indrukwekkend om te zien hoe hij in twee jaar tijd één van de grootste sterren van het moment is geworden met een aanzienlijke fanbase. Toch zijn er ook verbeterpunten. De introverte zanger maakt weinig contact met zijn publiek, lacht niet en is continu enkel gericht op het zingen. Hij raast als een stoomtrein door zijn setlist van maar liefst 28 liedjes heen. Dat betekent dat zijn stem de hele show moet dragen, wat geen probleem blijkt gezien het concert zijn fans zeker kan bekoren.
