Single Review: HAIM – Right Now

Haim Right Now

HAIM give us an insight in their work in the studio with ‘Right Now’
At the end of 2012, American band HAIM was named as one of the most promising new artists for the coming year and they sure did prove themselves with their successful debut record Days Are Gone, containing hit singles like ‘The Wire’, ‘Forever’ and ‘Falling’. Now, almost four years later, they are finally getting ready for the release of the sophomore record Something To Tell You which is supposed to come out on the 7th of July. The sisters just dropped the very first taste of this upcoming project with the studio footage video for the track ‘Right Now’.

After their debut record, the only new material the band released was the collaboration ‘Pray To God’ with Calvin Harris, but judging by the sound of ‘Right Now’, they are sticking to the indie pop that became typical for Danielle, Este and Alana Haim. The sisters take us to the studio where the magic happens as an introduction to the brand new era in their career. Lead vocalist Danielle sings the track from behind the piano and the verses are all about her distinctive vocals, while Este plays the bass and repeats the words ‘right now’ as part of the hook. Both Alana and Este leave their guitars halfway through and take over the drums, building towards a subtle climax. Lyrically, ‘Right Now’ deals with rejection that suddenly turns into admiration when you already moved on: “And now you’re saying that you need me baby, right now, and now you’re saying that you love me babe, right now.” It is simple, relatable and straight from the heart. At the end of the recording, we hear one of the girls saying: “That’s how you fucking do it!” Couldn’t agree more on that one! HAIM is back and we can’t wait for more!
