Single Review: Halsey – Eyes Closed

Halsey drops song she co-wrote with The Weeknd
American pop artist Halsey is in full promotional mode at the moment. In exactly four weeks from now her sophomore album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom will see the light of day. She recently dropped the lead single ‘Now Or Never’, which I quite heavily criticized for sounding too much like Rihanna’s ‘Needed Me’. I now have to admit the track grew a little on me. In terms of originality it still scores 0 points, but there is something there that keeps me coming back to it. Enough reason to give the follow up ‘Eyes Closed’ a chance!

‘Eyes Closed’ became available with the pre-order of the record and is co-written by The Weeknd and Halsey herself. The production, which is beautifully subtle and quite stellar all together, is done by Cashmere Cat, Benny Blanco and Happy Perez. The sound of the Weeknd, who recently also collaborated with Lana Del Rey on the divine ‘Lust For Life’, is clearly hearable on ‘Eyes Closed’, although it is more in line with his Beauty Behind The Madness album than his more recent Starboy project. Halsey, who sometimes does a bit too much vocally, hits exactly the right spot on this track with a toned down emotive delivery. This makes the lyric “if I keep my eyes closed, he looks just like you”, hit even harder!
