Single Review: Miley Cyrus – Malibu

Miley Cyrus Malibu

Miley Cyrus comes back with a warm summer breeze as new single
Almost four years ago Miley Cyrus shocked the world with her hiphop inspired album Bangerz, singles ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ and of course her controversial image at that time. Ever since she dropped the low key follow up Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz on SoundCloud and became one of the judges on The Voice in the US. In a recent interview with Billboard about her new music she explained she is leaving the hiphop beats behind and embraces her country and folk roots. She just dropped her brand new single ‘Malibu’, the first taken from her upcoming album, expected later this year.

‘Malibu’ seems like a good indication of the new direction Cyrus already talked about. Don’t expect a full on roots singer-songwriter type of sound, because Miley thankfully still sounds poppy, but with a completely different vibe this time around. The beats are gone and a more acoustic instrumentation took over, but that doesn’t make ‘Malibu’ any less catchy than her earlier work. The drums, guitar riff and hand claps underline the infectious melody and Miley sounds warmer and more relaxed than ever. Lyrically, ‘Malibu’ is all about her being together with Liam Hemsworth again. The track, including its video, is a warm and pleasant summer breeze; the perfect soundtrack to a barbecue on a beautiful night with your friends and lover. Kudos to Miley for following her own path and reinventing herself like this! I am sure she is going to gain quite some new fans with this country and folk inspired direction, that still sounds poppy enough to become a worldwide hit.
