Selena Gomez goes for quirky and edgy on new single ‘Bad Liar’
Selena Gomez once rose to fame as the new star of Disney. She first made it as an actress but soon after launched a music career with The Scene. Throughout the years, the focus switched more and more towards the music. Nowadays she is a solo pop star and her most recent album Revival showed a more mature side of her with the sexy singles ‘Good For You’ and ‘Hands To Myself’. She toured the world to promote that record and now two years later, we get her brand new single ‘Bad Liar’.

After the successful Kygo collaboration ‘It Ain’t Me’, Gomez is back to doing things on her own and ‘Bad Liar’ will serve as the first single from her upcoming new album. Lyrically it is quite similar to what she did on the singles for Revival (which is not surprising as she worked with the same co-writers Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter), which means: it’s sexy and sensual! Well, actually the track is about not being able to get over an ex, but Gomez delivers this in a rather sensual way. Sonically, Selena and her team go for a more quirky and edgy sound, even borrowing the bassline from new wave classic ‘Psycho Killer’ by Talking Heads. The result? It is an unusual pop single, which works with the vocal limitations of Gomez; she whispers and talks more than she sings, but she does deliver her lines with enough attitude. The chorus is not the most straight forward radio hit you could imagine, but after a few spins it settles in your brain easily. Towards the end, ‘Bad Liar’ becomes a bit repetitive (yeah we know you are trying girl!), but this is an interesting single to kick off a campaign with, to say the least! I thought I wasn’t here for new Selena Gomez, but somehow she has got me intrigued again!
