Single Review: Liv – Hurts To Liv

LIV Hurts To Liv

Lykke Li’s liv grieves on new single
Swedish singer-songwriter and pop star Lykke Li started a new chapter in her career last year when she launched her very own supergroup LIV. Together with Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt and Pontus Winnberg, Bjorn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John and last but not least Lykke’s partner Jeff Bashker she launched the band with the track ‘Wings of Love’ and the singles ‘Dream Awake’ and ‘Heaven’ followed. Now it’s time for track number four: the melancholic ‘Hurts To Liv’.

“This song is dedicated to my dear mamma”, Lykke wrote on her social media pages. “It hurts so much more now. I miss you everyday. if only I would have told you more often how much I love you.” The track is very personal to Andrew as well, who recently lost his father. The pain of losing a close one is tangible in Lykke’s arresting vocal performance. In terms of style the song is not far removed from the sound of her most recent solo album I Never Learn. It does have the same emotional power through piercing vocals and stripped back instrumentation. ‘Hurts To Liv’ is a song about grief, but also teaches us to look forward. “Sometimes we forget to live and be in love, ’cause it hurt to live”, they tell us. We can always count on Lykke and her men to deliver wise words and melancholic vibes packed in beautiful melodies!
