Taylor Swift launches fourth promo single from Reputation
We are only one week away from the release of Taylor Swift’s long awaited album reputation, but the pop star is not done yet with throwing singles at us. After the much talked about ‘Look What You Made Me Do’, the poppy ‘…Ready For It’ and the slightly disappointing ‘Gorgeous’, she now treats us to ‘Call It What You Want’. Is reputation shaping up to be a strong album or nah?
‘Call It What You Want’ is easily the most understated track so far. The production is still very much electronic with prominent beats, but the pace is lower for this midtempo love song. Of course, the lyrics in the verses once more reference the whole public drama she went through with Kanye West and the Kardashians: “My castle crumbled overnight, I brought a knife to a gun fight. They took the crown but it’s alright.” The chorus is an ode to a lover that helped her through this period of heavy criticism. Lyrically the verses are predictable, but servicable while the chorus unfortunately falls flat. “My baby’s fit like a daydream, walking with his head down. I’m the one he’s walking to” just doesn’t sound as good as it probably did in Taylor’s head. Having said that, the vocal production is off the chain here and Taylor’s voice shines throughout. Definitely not the weakest nor the strongest of the reputation tracks so far. Is Taylor holding back on the absolute tunes or will this record just not be nearly as good as 1989? We will find out next week!
