Camila Cabello announces debut album and drops two new singles
2017 has been a hell of a ride for Camila Cabello. After she left the girl band Fifth Harmony last year, she started her solo career with the single ‘Crying In The Club’ in the first half of this year. Although the track received moderate success, it was not the breakout hit her team hoped for. Next single ‘Havana’ proved to be exactly what Camila needed though. It took the track a few months to grow, but it has been number 1 in the UK for weeks now, while peaking at number 2 in the US Billboard Hot 100. Now Cabello finally announced her debut album simply titled Camila for a release on the 12th of January. To celebrate, she just dropped the new tracks ‘Never Be The Same’ and ‘Real Friends’.
It is not the first time Camila and her team pull this trick. Back when ‘Havana’ was released, she dropped the single ‘OMG’ on the same day, although it became clear later that ‘Havana’ deserved the proper push. It seems that her team has now decided that ‘Never Be The Same’ is the official next single, while ‘Real Friends’ will be more of a pre-order promo. That seems the right decision. ‘Never Be The Same’ is an intriguing pop song that shows a completely different side to her as an artist as well as her vocals. She uses the higher register of her voice, hitting all the right notes. Camila described the song as the best thing she has written so far. It will be a tough job to top the huge success of ‘Havana’ with it, but the chorus certainly is strong enough to pull of another chart hit. The lyrics about a relationship turned sour are all too relatable as well!
‘Real Friends’ is a stripped back tune about her struggle to find friends who actually care about her. Her voice sounds warm while at the same time easily getting the heartbreaking story of the lyrics across. This is not necessarily radio material I suppose, but it does an excellent job in showing of yet another side to Camila the pop star! Thank you for giving us something to look forward to after the holidays, miss Cabello! Camila will be released on the 12th of January!
