Harry Styles owns Ziggo Dome with impressive second leg of debut tour
It is almost a year ago that Harry Styles released his self-titled debut album, but he is still in the midst of promoting it with a lengthy tour. The former One Direction band member surprised with anthemic pop rock ballad ‘Sign Of The Times’ as debut single and an indie rock and Britpop inspired full record, both critically acclaimed and a bestseller. Last year he already started performing the record and he played AFAS Live in Amsterdam, which was sold out in minutes. Now he returned to the way bigger Ziggo Dome with an updated show as part of a second installment of the tour and A Bit of Pop Music reporters Charlotte and Nadine were there to fangirl for their lives and to tell us all about what went down!

Harry Styles brought soul and R&B star Mabel with him as supporting act. Born in Spain, raised in Sweden and based in London, she released her first EP last year with the successful singles ‘Finders Keepers’ and ‘Fine Line’ (which she saved for last in her set) to her name. She opened with one of her best songs to date, ‘Thinking Of You’, and although her vocals were on point, her performance lacked energy. There simply wasn’t much happening on stage which caused the Harry Styles fans to soon lose focus. Her talent is undeniable, but still has room to grow when it comes to stage presence and interaction with her audience.

When it was finally time for mister Styles to take the stage, his teenage fans screamed their lungs out. Accompanied by a band consisting of a drummer, keyboardist, guitarist and bass player and dressed in a flamboyant white shirt and proper seventies pants, he started out with the energetic album track ‘Only Angel’. He kept the pace high with next track ‘Woman’ while the fragile but oh so beautiful ‘Ever Since New York’ was the first more intimate moment. What follows is a well constructed setlist consisting of all 10 tracks on his album, a predictable Fleetwood Mac cover, a surprising Ariana Grande cover of the track ‘Just a Little Bit of Your Heart’ which he actually wrote himself and two previously unreleased songs (‘Medicine’ and ‘Anna’).

Although Harry’s musical style has quickly evolved after starting a solo career, he does play a handful of One Direction tracks to keep his fans who supported him from the start happy. Highlights of the night however are a goosebumps inducing acoustic rendition of ‘Sweet Creature’ which he plays on a smaller stage in the middle of the audience and a visually pleasing performance of ‘Two Ghosts’, which makes smart use of the video screens behind Styles and band. Ziggo Dome almost explodes when he finally starts his biggest hit to date, ‘Sign Of The Times’ and every single soul in the arena seems to sing along. It is no surprise that this track, which seems to be written for this kind of setting with its big sing-along chorus, sounds even better live than on record.

Of course he comes back once more for an encore and he closes the night with the explosive single ‘Kiwi’. He urged to crowd to once more give it their all and so they did. Styles is the type of showman who does not even have to finish his question to get the crowd to react the way he wants. Vocally he never misses a note and during numerous songs he played guitar. Although Styles has years of experience with One Direction, it feels like this tour is the exciting start of a completely new career!

Concert Recensie: Harry Styles live in Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam

Harry Styles keert terug met indrukwekkend tweede deel debuuttour
Het is alweer bijna een jaar geleden dat Harry Styles vriend en vijand verraste met de de start van zijn solocarrière, maar hij is nog altijd druk bezig met de promotie van zijn naar zichzelf vernoemde debuutplaat. Styles die bekend werd als deel van boyband One Direction sloeg met debuutsingle rock ballad ‘Sign Of The Times’ gelijk een nieuwe weg in en ging nog een stapje verder met het door indie rock en Britpop geïnspireerde debuutalbum dat als warme broodjes over de toonbank ging en goed werd ontvangen door critici. Na een in enkele minuten uitverkochte show in AFAS Live vorig jaar, keerde Styles voor deel twee van zijn tour terug naar Amsterdam om ditmaal Ziggo Dome plat te spelen. A Bit of Pop Music reporters Charlotte en Nadine waren erbij om de fangirl uit te hangen en ons alles te vertellen over de show!

Harry Styles bracht R&B en soultalent Mabel met zich mee als voorprogramma. De in Spanje geboren, in Zweden opgegroeide en in Londen woonachtige zangeres maakte naam voor zichzelf met haar eerste EP die vorig jaar verscheen. Ze scoorde onlangs hits met tracks ‘Fine Line’ en ‘Finders Keepers’ die ze in haar set tot het laatste bewaart. Ze opent met ‘Thinking Of You’ en hoewel er vocaal weinig op haar optreden aan te merken valt, mist het energie. Er gebeurt vrij weinig op het podium waardoor de fans van Styles maar moeilijk hun aandacht erbij kunnen houden. Haar talent staat buiten kijf, maar op het gebied van interactie met haar publiek en podiumpresentatie valt er nog veel te winnen.

Toen het eindelijk tijd was voor Styles om het podium te betreden, gilden alle tienerfans in de Ziggo Dome hun longen uit hun lijf. Styles komt op in een flamboyant bloesje en bijbehorende jaren ’70 broek, bijgestaan door een band bestaande uit toetsenist, drummer, gitarist en basgitarist. Ze openen met het opzwepende ‘Only Angel’ en houden het tempo hoog met ‘Woman’. Het eerste intieme moment volgt met het prachtig breekbare ‘Ever Since New York’. Wat volgt is een sterk opgebouwde setlist bestaande uit alle tien liedjes van zijn album, een voorspelbare Fleetwood Mac cover, een verrassende Ariana Grande cover (van het lied ‘Just a Little Bit of Your Heart’ dat hij zelf schreef) en twee niet eerder uitgebrachte liedjes (‘Medicine’ en ‘Anna’).

Hoewel Harry’s stijl moeilijk te vergelijken is met het werk van de band die hem groot maakte, laat hij zijn fans van het eerste uur niet in de steek. Tot hun genoegen brengt hij ook een aantal nummers van One Direction ten gehore. De hoogtepunten van de avond zijn echter een kippenvel veroorzakende versie van ‘Sweet Creature’ die hij op een kleiner podium in het midden van de zaal zingt en een visueel prachtig optreden van ‘Two Ghosts’ waarbij slim gebruik gemaakt wordt van de schermen achter Harry en de band. De Ziggo Dome ontploft haast als de eerste tonen van ‘Sign Of The Times’ klinken en het wordt dan ook luidkeels meegezongen door iedereen in de zaal. Zoals verwacht klinkt het refrein dat haast voor deze arena setting geschreven lijkt, live nog veel beter.

Natuurlijk keert de man van de avond nog eenmaal terug voor een toegift. De avond wordt uiteindelijk definitief afgesloten met het explosieve ‘Kiwi’. Hij vraagt het publiek om nog één keer volledig uit hun dak te gaan en dat is dan ook precies wat ze doen. Styles is het type showman wat aan een halve zin genoeg heeft om het publiek te laten doen wat hij wil. Vocaal staat hij ook zeker zijn mannetje en mist geen noot, ook niet als hij er een gitaar bij pakt. Hoewel hij al jaren op het podium stond als onderdeel van One Direction, voelt dit concert van zijn eerste arenatour als het spectaculaire begin van een veelbelovende carrière.
