Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj teams up once more on ‘The Light Is Coming’
It has been a busy few weeks for Ariana Grande. She came back in April with one of the best singles of the year so far, ‘No Tears Left To Cry’. Last week she appeared on Troye Sivan’s latest single ‘Dance To This’ as well as delivering the chorus for Nicki Minaj’s ‘Bed’. This week Minaj returns the favour with a rap verse on Ariana’s pre-order release ‘The Light Is Coming’.
‘The Light Is Coming’ sure makes us wonder what direction Grande is going in with upcoming new album, as it sounds nothing like the bright and radiofriendly pop of the lead single. The track opens with Minaj’s verse, sounding fierce as always. Pharrell Williams delivered one of his bonkers productions for this tune, but this time he might have taken it a bit too far. The beat is slick and the chorus could have worked, if only the sample of the man shouting ‘You wouldn’t let anybody speak, but instead…’ wasn’t repeated as annoyingly often and wouldn’t have been so loud and prominent. Ariana and her team obviously wanted to try something new for her and while she pulls it off vocally, the final product is not convincing. There is a fine line between repetitive choruses being catchy and annoying and that sample pushed ‘The Light Is Coming’ in the latter category.
Update: You can watch the video for ‘The Light Is Coming’ over at Reebok.
The song isn’t the second single, its only a promo track
Thanks for your comment! The lines are a bit blurry sometimes when it comes to what is considered a single or not, especially when the track is promoted with a video. But you’re right, officially it is just a pre-order promo release.
The song sucks because thiefarrel williams is behind it. Unlistenable because “You wouldn’t let anybody speak, but instead” line is repeated every 5 seconds. Other than that, still a repetitive song with 50x “The light is coming to give back everything the darkness stole”. Haven’t heard such trash song in a while (or ever?) Pharrell should continue stealing other songs because he can’t make any himself.
Great read- Agreed with lots of what you mentioned
thank you for sharing! huge fan
