Single Review: Marshmello & Bastille – Happier

Marshmello Bastille Happier

Marshmello and Bastille are ready to storm the charts
The star of producer Marshmello is rising quickly. His big break on mainstream radio came when his track ‘Silence’ with Khalid became an international hit. Soon the pop stars lined up to collaborate with him which gained him two more huge hits: ‘Wolves’ with Selena Gomez and ‘Friends’ with Anne-Marie. Now he is ready for the next one! With the guys of British band Bastille he worked on the brand new single ‘Happier’.

Bastille released their most recent album Wild World back in 2016 and kicked off a new era with their single ‘Quarter Past Midnight’ earlier this year. On ‘Happier’, Marshmello took care of the production with Steve Mac, while Dan Smith provided the vocals and lyrics. In terms of construction, the song is quite predictable for this day and age with an electronic drop in the chorus. However, this did not take the place of vocal hooks, because they are still very much present! Lyrically, the song is about the moment you realize that the person you are with is probably better off without you. “I want to raise your spirits, I want to see you smile but know that means I’ll have to leave”, Dan sings with the heartbreak hearable in his vocals. Danceable heartbreak in a song is the best (probably the only good) kind of heartbreak and I am pretty sure it will gain Marshmello and Bastille another well deserved hit!

Update: The video follows the friendship of a young girl and her dog. Get the tissues ready…
