Single Review: Sigala – Just Got Paid (feat. Ella Eyre, Meghan Trainor & French Montana)

Sigala drops new single with big star line up
Sigala is almost ready to share his debut album Brighter Days with the world. The British hit producer had his big break when his single ‘Easy Love’ went to number 1 back in 2015. Ever since, he has consistently been working with a long string of pop stars on his singles. He collaborated with the likes of Craig David, Paloma Faith, John Newman, Nile Rodgers, Hailee Steinfeld, Sean Paul, The Vamps and Ella Eyre. With Eyre, he released the hit ‘Came Here For Love’ in the summer of 2017 and now the two collaborated again on new single ‘Just Got Paid’. Sigala must have thought to himself: “Why only have one featuring artist when you can also have three!?” And so he invited Meghan Trainor and French Montana to jump on the track too!

It is very clear that Sigala and his team of stars direct this song to the partying masses. The lyrics are all about not being able to save up money because you go all out after pay day. “I know I drink too much, can’t pay my rent this month, I should be saving up, but I just got paid”, Eyre sings with her signature deep vocals over a building up beat. Trainor takes care of the verse and the contrast between her high pitched vocals and those of Eyre is quite significant. The chorus has some infections trumpet action which gives the track a funky disco vibe. Although ‘Just Got Paid’ is a decent tune, I can’t help but feel that it chases hit status a bit too obviously, without actually delivering the hook to support it. It might still appeal to the masses though, especially on pay day!
