Lana Del Rey drops another new single from 2019 album
Last week, Lana Del Rey made a comeback (if you can even call it that, just a year after her most recent record Lust For Life came out) with the brand new single ‘Mariners Apartment Complex’. The track was the first of two new tunes, produced by Jack Antonoff and taken from her upcoming album to be released in 2019. The second single, ‘Venice Bitch’, just premiered on Beats 1 with Zane Lowe and is 10 minutes long!
Now Lana Del Rey is not exactly known for conforming to what radio wants, but releasing a 10 minute long single is a whole new level of making her own rules. She explained in an interview on Beats 1 how her label was more than hesitant to put this track out as a (buzz) single, but Del Rey got her way in the end. “I was like well, end of summer, some people just wanna drive around for 10 minutes get lost in some electric guitar”, she concluded. ‘Venice Bitch’ is definitely more road trip material than a radio hit, but that is totally alright. The track starts off with a standard pop song structure of verse and chorus, but after the three minute mark, bursts into a long, slightly psychedelic electric guitar solo. Del Rey herself pops up every once in a while to repeat the (very instant I must add) chorus hook or mumble some new lyrics. My pop brain could have done with a version at least 4 minutes shorter, but I applaud Del Rey and Antonoff for recording exactly what they want to make. As Del Rey puts it herself in the first verse: “Fresh out of fucks forever!”
Del Rey announced that her album will be titled Norman Fucking Rockwell and will be released some time next year.
