Dinah Jane releases solo debut single ‘Bottled Up’
All (ex-)members of girl band Fifth Harmony are working hard on their solo careers. After Camila Cabello left the group at the end of 2016 and had huge solo success in 2017 with singles like ‘Havana’ and ‘Never Be The Same’, the group went on an indefinite hiatus. Lauren Jauregui announced a solo career and appeared on singles by Halsey and Steve Aoki, while Normani had a hit with Khalid duet and Love, Simon soundtrack ‘Love Lies’. Now it is Dinah Jane’s turn to try her luck solo with her debut single ‘Bottled Up’, which features Ty Dolla $ign and Marc E. Bassy.
Dinah Jane decided to stay true to Fifth Harmony’s sound for her own debut. ‘Bottled Up’ has a similar production and vibe to arguably their biggest hit, ‘Work From Home’, which also featured rapper Ty Dolla $ign. They even reference the track with the line ‘Work from home, but he gon’ stay up with me’. The light R&B tune packs a decent hook, but lyrically the chorus is a let down with the repetition of the lyrics: “I’m drinking baby ’cause I’m bottled up. I’m smoking baby, yeah I’m high as f**k.” I won’t go as far as saying that ‘Bottled Up’ is a bad song, but I do think it is too weak to properly launch Dinah Jane as a solo act. The track simply sounds too much like the tunes we already heard of Fifth Harmony and with two features, there is not enough time for Dinah to shine through. Having said that, I will admit that Camila Cabello’s debut single ‘Crying In The Club’ showed that she, at that stage, was still in search of her own sound and voice. Enough reason to stay hopeful that Dinah Jane’s very own ‘Havana’ moment is yet to come!
