Charli XCX and Troye Sivan want to go back to ‘1999’
Charli XCX hasn’t released an album since 2014, but she keeps delivering a whole lot of new material in other ways. In 2016 she dropped an EP, in 2017 two mixtapes followed and this year she has already given us four different single releases. Today number 5 sees the light of day! Charli recorded a collaboration with Troye Sivan, who dropped his second LP Bloom just a couple of weeks ago. They team up on the track 1999 that is all about 90s nostalgia!
‘1999’ initially leaked as a solo demo by Charli and was supposed to be produced by Max Martin, but she met up with Troye Sivan for a brand new version, which is produced by Swedish producer Oscar Holter, who worked with Troye before as well as Katy Perry and Tove Lo. The result is a bouncy tribute to the year mentioned in the title. Charli and Troye just want to go back to 1999, to sing Britney’s ‘…Baby One More Time’. Don’t we all!? ‘1999’ has an incredibly catchy chorus with an infectious electronic pop production. Charli rap-sings her way to the verses and for Troye this is new ground, but he does not sound out of place at all. A bop and a half, ladies and gentlemen!
Update: Charli and Troye released the video for ‘1999’ and it is one big dress up party! They throw heaps of late 90s references at us in those three and a half minutes. We see them imitate scenes from Titanic, American Beauty and the Matrix while they dress up as pop stars like the Spice Girls, Eminem, Backstreet Boys, Justin Timberlake and TLC. Both Charli and Troye look like they have the most fun recording all the different scenes and the result is fast paced, funny with a good dose of camp; exactly what the song deserved.
