Normani teams up with 6lack for new track ‘Waves’
Normani did not take the conventional road for her solo career so far. The Fifth Harmony star released her first material without the band back in February, when she appeared with Khalid on the international hit ‘Love Lies’. Her next step was a two track EP with Calvin Harris, consisting of the two bops ‘Checklist’ and ‘Slow Down’. As the tracks did not exactly receive the hype they deserve, Normani is quick to follow up with new material. ‘Waves’, her new single with 6LACK, is a departure from the dancehall and electronic vibe, towards contemporary R&B.

‘Waves’, produced by Jonah Christian, is a moody slice of R&B that deals with the feelings of doubt and desperation when being in an unstable on-again-off-again relationship. She perfectly words the frustration in lyrics like: “When I have you, wanna leave you, if you go, that’s when I need you, I can’t help myself, no!” ‘Waves’ is brooding yet sensual tune with a radiofriendly quality at the same time, thanks to the excellent hooks in both the pre-chorus and actual chorus. 6LACK delivers a rap verse that effortlessly blends in with the vibe of the track and turns the lyrics into a dialogue. Normani has showed us she is versatile as a solo artist and not afraid to take a risk. If she manages to keep this up, her debut album will be quite the ride!
