Kelly Rowland returns with in-your-face self love anthem
Kelly Rowland made a surprising comeback over the weekend. Five years after her most recent album, Talk A Good Game, the former Destiny’s Child star and former X Factor Judge dropped a new single seemingly out of the blue. The last we heard from her was a feature with Missy Elliott on the Busta Rhymes track ‘Get It’ earlier this year. There is no news yet on a potential fifth studio album, but one thing is for sure. Kelly Rowland is more confident than ever on the new tune, conveniently titled ‘Kelly’.
It is not unusual for pop artists to name albums after themselves (be it just their first or their full name), but to do the same with a song is almost unheard of. When artists do this to their albums, it is often to stress that the record is more personal than their previous ones. Kelly Rowland just wants us to know it is all about… Kelly! ‘Kelly’ is a self love anthem of the cocky kind and Rowland pulls it off with attitude. The chorus is basically a list of all the things Kelly has got: “Kelly got bands, Kelly got a check, Kelly got wig, Kelly got deals, Kelly got class, Kelly got ass” etc. She lists all those things over a thick hiphop beat, that some have already compared to BeyoncĂ© and Jay-Z’s ‘Apeshit’. Sure, the track has got a similar vibe going on, but Rowland proves with ‘Kelly’ that she is still a star in her own right!
