Kim Petras teams up with hit producers Cheat Codes on new track
2018 has been a big year for Kim Petras. The Germany born, but Los Angeles based pop artist had her biggest hit so far with the pop banger ‘Heart To Break’ at the start of the year and dropped the spooky Halloween themed EP Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1 in October. Most of her work so far has been with more than controversial producer Dr. Luke, for which she has received criticism. On today’s release she works with hit producers Cheat Codes, who can turn a collaboration with a female pop star or band into a hit, judging by their tunes with Little Mix and Demi Lovato. Is the same going to happen with ‘Feeling Of Falling’ featuring Kim Petras?
Cheat Codes are mostly known for their generic, contemporary electronic pop sound and that is exactly what they serve on ‘Feeling Of Falling’. This means that Kim Petras moves into more trend chasing territory than her usual straightforward, sparkly, almost bubblegum pop sound. There is nothing wrong with doing some of that to win the general public over though. Petras’s voice shines and the hooks are there. The production is strong most of the time, but the post-chorus drop with the cut up vocal effects does not hit the spot for me. It seems like the Cheat Codes guys went slightly overboard with the effects there, taking away from the actual melody and build up. It’s still a decent enough tune that does its job if it gives Petras more exposure!
