Avril Lavigne continues impressive comeback with new single
Five years after the release of her self titled album, Avril Lavigne finally returned with new music. In September, she launched her powerful comeback single ‘Head Above Water’, that described her struggle in the past few years. The singer was diagnosed with lyme disease in 2014 and was basically bedridden for two years, while also going through a divorce (she was married to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger) in 2015. Lavigne is ready to share her story with us on the upcoming album Head Above Water, which will be released on the 15th of February 2019. The second single ‘Tell Me It’s Over’ is out now!

It seems that Avril has left behind her punk-pop-rock beginnings and is aiming for a more mature sound. On ‘Tell Me It’s Over’ she delivers a soul throwback of the kind that many female pop artists have incorporated in their sound over the past few years (most notably Rihanna and Ariana Grande). Avril pulls it off surprisingly well! Her voice has never sounded so deep and soulful before, to a point where I might not even have recognized her in the first verse if I hadn’t known it was her new single. In the chorus, she properly belts out some big notes, seemingly effortless of course. Lyrically, the song is about an unstable relationship in which she is constantly fighting with her partner, after which they make up, leaving her unsure of where they are headed as a couple. She begs him to tell her it is over, but the uplifting melody of the chorus suggests that she actually does not want him to say that at all. She might enjoy this heated relationship a little bit more than she admits! ‘Tell Me It’s Over’ is a big next step after ‘Head Above Water’ seems to have started Avril’s transition into a more mature, adult contemporary sound.

Avril also premiered a Christmas-themed video for the song!
