The Netherlands selects upcoming singer-songwriter to Eurovision
Public broadcaster AVROTROS ended the weeks of speculation about the Dutch entry for the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. Today they announced that upcoming singer-songwriter Duncan Laurence will represent the country with a song to be premiered on the 7th of March. The Netherlands found reasonable success again at the contest by sending established artists like Anouk (9th in 2013), The Common Linnets (2nd in 2014), Douwe Bob (11th in 2016) and O’G3NE (11th in 2017). The Dutch team seems to be taking a huge risk with the way less established and experienced Duncan Laurence…
So who is Duncan Laurence and how did he become the Dutch Eurovision entry? The 24 years old singer-songwriter’s real name is Duncan de Moor and he participated in the Dutch version of The Voice back in 2014 in which he made it to the semi finals. After the show he focused on the Rock Academy, where he graduated last year. During his time on the voice, Ilse DeLange (part of the Common Linnets) coached Duncan and she was the one telling the selection committee about him. “Duncan is very special”, she explained. “What he writes sounds international and is authentic”. Other members who had a say in the selection process explained how they were all so blown away by the song that Duncan presented, that they all decided they needed to send him to Tel Aviv, where Eurovision will take place in May.
Other than his performances during The Voice and some videos published on YouTube, there is not any of Duncan Laurence’s music to be found yet. As AVROTROS has not shared any news about the song yet, we can only guess what his Eurovision tune is going to sound like. The rumour mill in the Netherlands over the past few days said that the country would be represented by a dance song, which seems unlikely now. The promo photo released with the news, pictures Duncan behind the piano. During his graduation concert last year he performed some of his own work, of which a song ended up on YouTube (scroll down to listen). That track could be described as a mysterious, intriguing ballad with electronic influences and a beautiful melodic progression. His vocals are powerful with an impressive range. Let us hope his Eurovision song will give him the opportunity to show off some of the higher notes he seems to be hitting with ease!
While Duncan Laurence’s official Spotify artist page does not have any of his music on it yet, he did create a playlist with weekly favourites which shows off his personal taste. The list includes A Bit of Pop Music favourites like Norwegian pop artist AURORA, British synth pop band Years & Years, Australian pop star Troye Sivan and more. Duncan has got a progressive taste for contemporary pop, an impressive voice and apparently wrote a killer tune. What could possibly go wrong? The only doubt I personally have with the selection so far, is that Laurence is not as experienced with big stages. To be fair though, no one can ever be fully prepared for the size of the Eurovision audience. All we can hope for now is that he gets the right coaching, will be able to contain his nerves and actually has a song that will indeed blow us all away!

Na weken van speculatie, geruchten en mondjesmaat nieuws, is de kogel eindelijk door de kerk. De AVROTROS heeft bekendgemaakt wie Nederland gaat vertegenwoordigen op het 64ste Eurovisie Songfestival dat wordt gehouden in Tel Aviv, Israël, in mei. De keuze is gevallen op de relatief onbekende singer-songwriter Duncan Laurence. Na jaren van over het algemeen zeer nette resultaten met gevestigde artiesten (Anouk werd 9e in 2013, The Common Linnets 2e in 2014, Douwe Bob 11e in 2016 en O’G3NE 11e in 2017) neemt de omroep nu dus een groot risico met een volledig nieuwe naam!
Maar wie is Duncan Laurence nu eigenlijk en hoe kreeg hij het felbegeerde ticket naar Tel Aviv in handen? De 24-jarige singer-songwriter werd geboren als Duncan de Moor en vergaarde voor het eerst bekendheid toen hij in 2014 auditie deed voor The Voice of Holland. Hij schopte het tot de halve finales, waarna hij zich richtte op de Rock Academy in Tilburg die hij vorig jaar afrondde. Tijdens zijn The Voice deelname werd hij begeleid door Ilse DeLange (onderdeel van The Common Linnets) en zij was degene die de selectiecommissie tipte over de zanger. “Duncan is heel bijzonder. Wat hij schrijft is heel erg internationaal. Het is authentiek”, licht ze toe. De selectiecommissie werd vervolgens unaniem weggeblazen door het lied waarmee Duncan op de proppen kwam, waardoor de keuze snel gemaakt was.
Naast zijn optredens tijdens The Voice en enkele videos op YouTube valt er nog vrij weinig over Duncan Laurence’s eigen materiaal te vinden. Gezien de AVROTROS ook nog geen verdere informatie heeft losgelaten, blijft het tot 7 maart gissen hoe zijn lied nu precies klinkt. De afgelopen weken ging het gerucht dat Nederland naar Israël zou afreizen met een dance song, maar dat lijkt nu onwaarschijnlijk. In de promotiefoto zien we Laurence achter een piano zitten. Tijdens zijn afstudeerconcert bij de Rock Academy speelde hij wat eigen werk, waarvan een filmpje online verscheen (scroll naar boven om te luisteren). Daar liet hij een mysterieuze ballade horen met heel wat hoge noten, een mooie melodie en wat elektronische invloeden. Hopelijk kan hij zijn indrukwekkende stemgeluid ook op het songfestivalpodium volop benutten.
Hoewel er op zijn artiestenprofiel op Spotify nog maar weinig te vinden is, heeft hij wel een Weekly Favourites playlist samengesteld waarin we kunnen ontdekken wat zijn muzieksmaak ons te bieden heeft. Hierop vinden we A Bit of Pop Music favorieten als de Noorse pop artieste AURORA, Brits synth pop trio Years & Years en Australische pop ster Troye Sivan. Hij houdt van progressieve, eigentijdse pop, heeft een prachtige stem en blijkbaar een killer song geschreven. Waar kan het nog fout gaan? Het enige aspect waarbij ik twijfels heb, is het feit Duncan totaal nog niet gewend is aan podia van de grootte van het Eurovisie Songfestival. Dat gezegd hebbende kun je je als gevestigd artiest ook nooit volledig voorbereiden op zo’n uitzonderlijk miljoenenpubliek. Laten we hopen dat hij de juiste begeleiding krijgt, zijn zenuwen in bedwang kan houden en dat zijn lied ons allemaal weg zal blazen!
