Years & Years return to Amsterdam with the Palo Santo Tour
When the UK synth pop band Years & Years first emerged, The Netherlands was one of the first countries to embrace their hit single ‘King’. The band visited Amsterdam and other cities and festivals around the country more than once with the tour for their debut album Communion. The band consisting of Olly, Emre and Mikey returns to Amsterdam, performing their second album Palo Santo, which was declared album of the year by A Bit of Pop Music. Do they do the pop brilliance of the record justice in a live setting?
Years & Years brought the Norwegian pop star Astrid S along with them as supporting act. Astrid, who is not far off Years & Years’ levels of success on streaming services, has more than a handful of excellent pop songs under her belt. She opens her set with the outstanding ‘Emotion’, one of her most recent singles. She premieres the upcoming single ‘Someone New’ (out on the 1st February) live and although she experienced some technical difficulties performing it, the bouncy electro pop banger about not being able to move on while your ex lover did, already sounds like a hit! After she belts out arguable her biggest hit so far, ‘Hurts So Good’, she lets us dance to upbeat tunes like ‘Breathe’, ‘Such A Boy’ and ‘Atic’. Astrid has the potential to one day play venues of the size of AFAS Live with her own international tour!
The guys of Years & Years are filling bigger venues than a couple of years ago and with that comes a bigger staging and more extravagant costumes. Leading man Olly Alexander gets his own show stairs to dance up and down on in his yellow top. During title track ‘Palo Santo’, he wears a massive glittery dress while standing on a platform that lifts him up; a show element as extra as a Katy Perry or Lady Gaga concert. Olly, Emre and Mikey are joined on stage by a female drummer and one lady and one gentleman on backing vocals. Especially the backing vocals are a great addition to the live sound of the band, as Olly could sometimes use some assistance for the bigger notes. He also has them ready to take over when he gets too carried away with his infectious dance moves, or prefers to do high paced ad libs over the actual chorus.
Having seen the band live more than once over the years, it is clear to see that they have grown a lot. Olly is a more convincing show man with more confident vocals and an extremely endearing stage presence. Sure, his vocals aren’t always pitch perfect from start to finish, but with a high paced, energetic show like The Palo Santo Tour, this is easy to forgive. The setlist is a well balanced mix of the tracks of their debut and new songs, to give fans of both era’s what they came for. They opened with the sensual R&B infused Palo Santo lead single ‘Sanctify’, while they keep the crowd dancing with their big pop bangers like ‘Shine’, ‘Karma’, ‘Meteorite’, ‘Desire’ and ‘Worship’.
Of course they have a stripped down moment in their show too, where Olly sits down behind the piano to belt out the ballad ‘Eyes Shut’ as well as an endearing performance of ‘Lucky Escape’. The backing vocals get their moment to shine too, with a strong medley of ‘No Tears Left To Cry’ (Ariana Grande) and ‘Like A Prayer’ (Madonna). From that moment on, the show accelerates towards its end with high energy renditions of hit singles ‘If You’re Over Me’, ‘All For You’, Jax Jones collaboration ‘Play’, to finish with their biggest hit to date ‘King’, during which AFAS Live almost seems to explode.
Years & Years might not be a pitch perfect, completely flawless live band, but the guys have shown heaps of growth since their last album campaign. Everything, from the outfits to the staging and from the vocals to the songs, is a bit bigger this time around. The tunes from Palo Santo sound even more energetic and swinging live as they do on record and the turn up in AFAS Live shows that the band has created a loyal following, even without having big radio hits in The Netherlands recently. And maybe most important of all with their upbeat brand of synth pop music, they know how to throw a party!

Years & Years keren terug naar Amsterdam met de Palo Santo Tour
Toen de Britse synth pop band Years & Years voor het eerst van zich lieten horen, stond Nederland vooraan om de hit single ‘King’ met open armen te ontvangen. De band trad door het hele land in verschillende poppodia en op een aantal festivals op met hun debuutalbum Communion. De band bestaande uit frontman Olly, Emre en Mikey keert nu terug naar Amsterdam voor een concert in AFAS Live om het vorig jaar verschenen album Palo Santo te promoten. Deze plaat werd door A Bit of Pop Music tot album van het jaar uitgeroepen. Komt het live echter net zo goed uit de verf als op plaat?
Years & Years hebben de Noorse popster Astrid S meegenomen als voorprogramma. Astrid, die qua streamingaantallen niet eens zoveel onderdoet voor de Britse band, heeft al meer dan een handvol ijzersterke popsongs op haar naam staan. Ze opent haar set met het uitstekende ‘Emotion’, één van haar meest recente singles. Ze brengt het lied ‘Someone New’, als een kleine primeur, gezien de single officieel pas volgende week verschijnt. Het uitvoeren van het pakkende electro pop nummer over het blijven vasthouden aan een ex die allang verder is gegaan met zijn leven, ging niet zonder slag of stoot, maar de track heeft zeker hitpotentie. Na het zingen van haar grootste hit tot nu toe, het grootse ‘Hurts So Good’, sluit ze af met de swingende tracks ‘Breathe’, ‘Such A Boy’ en ‘Atic’. Er zou zomaar eens een dag kunnen komen dat Astrid zelf internationaal zalen van dit formaat vult.
Years & Years staan tegenwoordig in grotere concertzalen dan rond hun debuut en dat gaat gepaard met een uitbundigere uitdossing op het podium, inclusief Olly’s outfits. De frontman, gekleed in een gele top, krijgt zijn eigen showtrap waar hij regelmatig op en neer overheen beweegt met aanstekelijke dansmoves. Tijdens de titeltrack ‘Palo Santo’ krijgt hij zelfs een gigantische goud glitterjurk aangemeten waarmee hij de lucht ingaat op een platform; Katy Perry en Lady Gaga zouden trots op hem zijn! Olly, Emre en Mikey worden dit keer bijgestaan door een drumster en een achtergrondzanger en -zangeres. Vooral dat laatste is een welkome aanvulling zodat Olly hier en daar op wat steun kan rekenen om de meer uitdagende noten er goed vanaf te brengen. Hier en daar gaat hij ook helemaal op in zijn moves of gooit hij er liever wat hoge uithalen uit en dan staat het achtergrondkoortje altijd paraat om het over te nemen.
Als iemand die de band door de jaren meerdere keren live heeft gezien, kan ik zeker beamen dat de mannen een grote groei hebben doorgemaakt. Olly is ditmaal overtuigender als showman die zijn publiek in zijn greep heeft, terwijl hij zijn zangpartijen ook met meer vertrouwen lijkt aan te pakken. Zijn vocalen zijn dan misschien niet constant helemaal loepzuiver, maar gezien het soort energieke show op hoog tempo dat Years & Years geeft, is dat geen afleidende factor. De setlist is een goede balans tussen de nieuwe plaat en eerder werk. Ze openen met de sensuele electro R&B van eerste single ‘Sanctify’ en geven de fans gelijk waar ze voor kwamen met knallers als ‘Shine’, ‘Karma’, ‘Meteorite’, ‘Desire’ en ‘Worship’.
Natuurlijk is er ook ruimte voor een wat intiemer moment in de show, als Olly plaatsneemt achter de piano om de ballad ‘Eyes Shut’ op emotionele, doch foutloze manier te vertolken. Een krachtige uitvoering van breakup anthem ‘Lucky Escape’ volgt. De achtergrondzangers krijgen ook hun moment om te stralen met een perfect uitgevoerde medley van ‘Not Tears Left To Cry’ (Ariana Grande) en ‘Like A Prayer’ (Madonna). Vanaf dat moment raakt de show in nog een hogere versnelling. De hits stapelen zich op met ‘All For You’, Jax Jones samenwerking ‘Play’ en natuurlijk als allerlaatst de wereldhit ‘King’. AFAS Live ontploft haast!
Years & Years is misschien niet de ultieme, foutloze liveband, maar ze hebben de afgelopen jaren een indrukwekkende groei doorgemaakt. Of het nu de podiumaankleding, de vocalen, de outfits of de liedjes zijn; alles is ditmaal een beetje grootser aangepakt. De liedjes op Palo Santo klinken live nog energieker en swingender en zelfs zonder recente radiohits hebben ze een trouw genoeg gevolg om de zaal hiervoor nagenoeg vol te krijgen. En ook niet onbelangrijk als dansbare synthpop band; het werd een behoorlijk feestje!
